Central revenue is great when it gives small markets the chance to compete. In the wrong hands it removes an incentive to field a quality team.

The Pirates have low key one of the worst owners in baseball. They’re not a big market but with that history, fanatical fan base and stadium, they should be a crown jewel of baseball. Their owners just run rock bottom payrolls and pocket the central revenue.

It’s underwhelming because the Orioles’ surrender was voluntarily. For years we wondered what the cost would be to buy back the Nationals tv rights. The answer turned out to be $0.

Barry touches on what matters most from the Orioles Nats settlement. In 2019, the team was playing in the World Series and MASN didn’t even bother sending somebody. The pinnacle of the sport and the postgame show was Dan Kolko sitting in a studio telling you what he saw on tv

Orioles selling almost definitely means MASN is toast. But it’s a symbolic victory. The cable tv bubble has already burst. The Nats missed the window.

It’s less of a miracle than it seems. The cost to televise the Nats has risen and the profit has shrunk due to cord cutting. The Orioles are probably relieved to get rid of this problem.

There are so many possibilities now. Partnering with Monumental. In market streaming. Better broadcasts. Better on air talent. Longer pre and postgame shows. More content.

The Nationals getting their tv rights back is less about money (in fact this move might not get them ANY extra revenue). It’s more about owning the means of distributing your product to your customers.
