The lesson of the 2019 Nationals is clear. Figure out what’s holding you back in life and send it to Philadelphia.

Notable that the article does not use the word “sad” or “saddest” and is pretty positive towards the team. Journalists do not write their own headlines, even if 90% of people (maybe more) only read the headlines.

The Washington Nationals have been one of baseball’s saddest franchises. Their solution this winter was to hire decision-makers in their 30s to fill every important leadership role. on.wsj.com/4tOaNP7

The Lerners were quirky before 2020 and have been downright terrible as owners since then. But Rizzo’s “navigated that ownership group for 20 years” quote is really alarming. Imagine hiring him at GM after an exit like that.

@klwoodjr It’s not complicated. He’s been a weekly guest in their show for over a decade.

The amount of Mike Rizzo support on The Junkies this morning is head scratching Yes, he won a World Series with the Nationals, but his draft history alone is worth being fired. We are last in almost every category in the minor leagues statswise, and this is after Rizzo fired guys and replaced them The other argument is that Mark Lerner didn’t give him enough resources. Look at the Tigers and Reds; they have playoff visions, and you want to know the difference between them and us? They know how to draft talent and develop them Mike Rizzo was a good GM, but that statement was true a decade ago, not now. The philosophy that every other team in the league has embraced, Rizzo refused to do it, and the effects of it are now showing

Central revenue is great when it gives small markets the chance to compete. In the wrong hands it removes an incentive to field a quality team.

The Pirates have low key one of the worst owners in baseball. They’re not a big market but with that history, fanatical fan base and stadium, they should be a crown jewel of baseball. Their owners just run rock bottom payrolls and pocket the central revenue.

It’s underwhelming because the Orioles’ surrender was voluntarily. For years we wondered what the cost would be to buy back the Nationals tv rights. The answer turned out to be $0.

I expected the MASN resolution to be a momentous day. For some reason, it feels underwhelming. On the Nationals, the Lerners, broadcast rights and future financial outlays — all with a raised eyebrow. washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/03…

Barry touches on what matters most from the Orioles Nats settlement. In 2019, the team was playing in the World Series and MASN didn’t even bother sending somebody. The pinnacle of the sport and the postgame show was Dan Kolko sitting in a studio telling you what he saw on tv

Orioles selling almost definitely means MASN is toast. But it’s a symbolic victory. The cable tv bubble has already burst. The Nats missed the window.

There are so many possibilities now. Partnering with Monumental. In market streaming. Better broadcasts. Better on air talent. Longer pre and postgame shows. More content.

The Nationals getting their tv rights back is less about money (in fact this move might not get them ANY extra revenue). It’s more about owning the means of distributing your product to your customers.
