I should maybe save this for the newsletter, but the closest comp to a Luis García trade I can find was the Joey Gallo trade in 2021. The Rangers got: - Ezequiel Duran (50 FV) - Josh Smith (45 FV) - Trevor Hauver (40 FV) - Glenn Otto (40 FV)

@JimlikesBB @YuccaMike @NationalsSource Agree. When you consider the bulk relievers’ ERAs (just as relievers), the team’s reliever ERA gets pulled down below last year’s stat. As relievers: Littel 2.94 (Wow!), Mikolas 3.51 (also Wow!), Alvarez 4.03 (unsurprising). So, perhaps better management; poorer personnel.

@BiggestJohnStud Everyone has a price not everyone has the money to pay it… a Wood deal with 4 years of control would make the Soto deal look like cash considerations 🤣

If the Nationals trade James Wood or CJ Abrams you can thank the Red Sox for fleecing Washington for Jake Bennett. Nationals desperately need pitching.

@jowole1216 It’s so easy to dunk on the “analytics” when things don’t work out in the moment, but over a large enough sample, they’re always gonna win out

@tonymatt9 They went into the year as if it was another rebuild year. No one expected this offense. Sucks but good news is this hopefully prompts some spending. I want to see this group with even just the 60 mil Rizzo got his last year

@NationalsSource So as bad as last year’s bullpen was, the ownership only allowed a slight improvement??? The Nats are 4th from the bottom in payroll in the whole MLB, and that’s what the Lerners think of their fan base??? Disgraceful.

I was digging around some bullpen stats and found this to be interesting This years bullpen actually has a better ERA than last years in the first half. 5.07 to 5.37… but what makes this year hurt more is the increase in blown saves… so I looked at save opportunities… so far the Nats have 54 this year… ALL OF LAST YEAR they only had 57😂 That’s due to the offensive improvement but interesting that even the worst part of this years team is still very slightly improved atleast ERA wise over last year

@RickyBlitt @Mikeysurf They would’ve paid it like other large contracts. But he certainly gave them a reason to reset and they’ve done very well with it… I agree it’s time to spend

@NationalsSource @Mikeysurf I always felt the Soto offer was more a PR move because they absolutely knew - as big as the offer was - that he and his agent were thinking waaaaay more than that. I would have loved to have seen their faces if even just to bust their balls Soto said ok

The Mets are a great example of why spending alone won’t get it done in baseball. Even the Dodgers who spend a lot obviously don’t get it done with just money…. I mean look at their all stars this year and you see it perfectly… 3/6 were a direct result of their development.

Post his death or post him stepping down? There was the Soto offer post his death and while you can say it wasn’t going to be accepted I doubt you offer the 4th largest commitment in sports history without some sort of intent to spend when it’s right. Also agree Toboni wouldn’t be here without some promises.

@Mikeysurf @NationalsSource All that is correct but post Ted Lerner there has not been a single thing to support the belief that spending will ever be the second step. The hope is Toboni wouldn’t have taken the job otherwise but he’s so young and had no leverage to make any demands

Jake Bennett pitches a 6.0 inning scoreless 1-hit gem. His ERA pushes down to a 2.35 in his 9 MLB starts. He will probably be 2nd in the ROY voting behind Kevin McGonigle. And 8 months ago, Bennett was a Washington #Nats top prospect and Paul Toboni traded him to his old team.

@DCwinningNow @federalbaseball @TalkNats Again is the book closed? You’re right he fell in love with his stuff rightfully so banked on them getting the control together we will see if they can. 2 years younger than Bennett which is a plus as well… they’ve got time to see if they can get it together.

@DCwinningNow @federalbaseball @TalkNats Correct me if I’m wrong but his career isn’t over right?😂… Pre TJ he had gotten his control to a reasonable level. Command is the last thing to return post TJ surgery. They’re banking that it will and if it does watch out. If it doesn’t he’s a reliever and probably a good one.

@DCwinningNow @federalbaseball @TalkNats Not saying I currently like him more than Bennett but there’s still plenty to like…. The stuff. Same thing Toboni liked to make the trade. Far too early to make any definitive calls on how he turns out as a prospect but certainly hell of a start for Bennett.

@federalbaseball @NationalsSource @TalkNats Want to know what he likes about Perales who some think will be a reliever. The comparison of Bennett to Foster Griffin is a good one. Finesse lefties who won't throw 96+ however they tunnel everything from their arsenal with movement and precision. Give me Bennett every 5 days.
