@JcScharl I come back to this same thought almost daily—living small. Walking to our neighborhood bodega and befriending the family who owns it. Talking with our neighbors. Thank you for the reminder. ❤️

The restoration of American society depends on a renewal of folk culture at the lowest possible levels: families, parishes, blocks, neighborhoods. Get together. Make things. Tell your stories well. Create local cults, with festivals. Honor small things greatly.

Should I get rid of the soft dress strangers always ask me if I’m pregnant in?

I don’t know how to explain this but Bermuda is the least spiritual of the grasses. It has everything to do with how it feels underfoot. That’s all I can say. I don’t make the rules.

This is my first time in the true South and people are very very nice. It is a complete reality shift. People WANT you to talk to them.

Hi Twitter. I know I only come here when I need something, but here I am, needing recs. I’m working on a piece of fiction that incorporates folklore/legend/myth. What should I be reading as I work on this? Madeline Miller is a fave of mine obviously, but who else?

@pfunkfabulous @OfficialBlueyTV Yessss now I can watch new episodes long after my toddler loses interest and starts tearing the house apart. (It’s not Bluey’s fault, to be clear… he loses interest with all TV.)

At what point in one’s gardening journey do seeds and sprouts stop feeling like magic? We did our first garden last year, and still this year I am utterly bewitched.

@JcScharl @HootenWilson Jane, YES. I’m so grateful my parents encouraged me to pursue what I loved. When I shared with my mom my desire to go to grad school for poetry, she said, “You will never, ever regret education.” 🙌🏼

@HootenWilson I wanted to be a poet at age 8 and my parents said go for it. Guess what? I'm a poet. *AND* I bill a lot of dollars per hour as a freelance writer and editor. Being excellent at something is rarely, maybe never, totally impractical.

On Sunday a girl in Bible class told me she's majoring in business when she goes to college because it's the most versatile degree. Afterwards I talked with her parents who told me they've dissuaded her from being a poet because it's impractical. She's eight years old.
