Excited to have received these LBA tools made by Bronze Age metal smith @neil_burridge. The axe heads are based on an example from the Kalemouth hoard, Roxburgh @NtlMuseumsScot. These high quality replicas will be vital for my experiments. I can't wait to use them!

A lovely project at the moment, these are the first many socket axes to be used for coppicing over the winter and other projects . This is quite exciting for me, my tools in the hands of the amazing green wood worker Hamish Darrah. The axe originally from Kalemouth

@artefactual_KW Thanks so much! Regrettably it looks like I can't edit the alt text now. I'll make sure to do it going forward though.

A few pics of recent work. Well maintained Hazel Coppice yields loads of material for habitat management/heritage crafts/environmental education.

Delighted to be working with @treesforlifeuk on the Wild Pine Project. This week we took samples to work out tree ages in this previously unrecorded West Highland site. One tree even had axe marks where ‘fir candle’ tapers had been taken long ago. #dendrochronology #rewilding

@treesforlifeuk Thanks - my pleasure. There is a lot of interest in the fir candles. Could be a good subject for some experimental archaeology @HamishDarrah ?

Wild pines are cultural artifacts too! While coring an old pine in the northwest Highlands, we found evidence of fir candles. These strips of resinous pine heartwood were used as a cheaper alternative to wax candles. Thanks @Dendrochronicle for your expertise! More in the 🧵

Some of us are still recovering from the great day our members had yesterday 🪓 Lots of materially-inclined conversations and collaborations coming out of it! Thanks to all involved and for @HamishDarrah for showing us the ropes… or woods! 🪵

@aron_of_boyles @tansyleemoir @TheNWDG That's expanded upon in the video. Adventitious coppicing is a type of informal/opportunistic coppicing. A creel in this context is a form of lobster pot (in the picture I tweeted). Hope this helps.
