Had so much fun at the Natural Products and Bioactive Molecules GRS! Heard about some amazing science and got to share some of my own 😁 coincidentally there’s a Slocumb Hall here at the campus! Looking forward to the GRC!

Just finished reading ⁦@HannahSlocumb5⁩ work on enantioselective hydroselenation of styrene and it’s derivatives! It’s a very great read and for junior chemists, such as myself. Hannah, I hope you gave your nose a break after this project. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ja…

So awesome working with Calvin this summer! I was constantly impressed with his chemistry knowledge and enthusiasm, and sad that he already has to go back to school! Excited to see where he goes from here, I know he’s going to do great things 😁

It was an honor to work with @HannahSlocumb5 this summer in the @Vy_Dong_Group! She’s super smart, funny and hardworking. I appreciate all of the advice she gave me during my time at UCI, and I hope and know she’ll earn that Ph.D. very soon! Also, I know that I suck at posing.

@ThuyPham0815 @Vy_Dong_Group Thanks Thuy! I haven’t tried one with R2=Cl, but I imagine it’d work similarly since Cl-substituted pyrazoles do work in our reaction. For ja/ka, the oxygen of the furan could competitively bind to the Pd center and promote off-cycle complexes, decreasing reactivity/yield.

@HannahSlocumb5 @Vy_Dong_Group Excellent work Hannah! I’m wondering beside the aj, have you ever tried the one with R2 = Cl? Also what do you consider the difference in the yield of ja and ka?

@basker25071980 @Vy_Dong_Group Thank you! The 1,2-selectivity is likely due to a higher preference for the pi allyl to put the pi conjugation next to the arene ring (1,4-addition is the major regioisomer for the cyclohexane substrate!). It’s also possible that sterics affects the pyrazole attack too.

@HannahSlocumb5 @Vy_Dong_Group Excellent work Hannah! How do you explain the selectivity? why does it goes for 1,2-addition rather than 1,4-addition! Also, why not the attach of amine at the most substituted carbon of the pi-allyl species in the intermediate IV.

@HannahSlocumb5 @Vy_Dong_Group hi,nice work, I'm curious, is it possible for the reaction to addition on the another alkene? and if the diene terminus position has a substituent, it could works?

@chemistfromIND @Vy_Dong_Group Thank you! I’m not totally sure as to the reason, but my immediate thought is that the oxygen of the furan could competitively bind to the Pd center and promote off-cycle complexes, decreasing reactivity/yield.
