Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. understood that fair housing is a threshold justice issue. In 1966, he moved his family into an impoverished Chicago neighborhood to expose the brutal realities of segregation and discriminatory housing policies—work that helped galvanize the Chicago Freedom Movement and laid critical groundwork for the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Nearly six decades later, the fight continues. Black communities and other communities of color are still too often denied equal access to safe, affordable housing and the full promise of opportunity. On this MLK Day, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by recommitting to the unfinished work of housing justice.
