RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra recently commented on India’s shift toward entrepreneurship, pointing to a growing number of young Indians choosing to build businesses rather than pursue traditional corporate jobs. There’s been an immense change in attitude towards entrepreneurship in Indian society over the past couple of decades. Here are three factors that I see driving this change: 𝟏. 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 Entrepreneurs are starting young! According to the GUESS India 2023 report, more than 14% of Indian students intend to become entrepreneurs immediately after graduation, and 31% plan to do it within five years. This is backed by government initiatives and university support, enabling them to access startup financing, incubation programs, and mentorship networks. 𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 More young Indians are choosing to turn their ideas into ventures. The appeal of autonomy, ownership, and the chance to build something from scratch is stronger than ever, and it gives them the chance to innovate, plan, and execute independently. 𝟑. 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐫 The definition of ‘entrepreneur’ has expanded, and social media has been a game-changer in this regard. Social media platforms make it possible for a wide range of businesses to reach customers, build a brand, and sell. In a country as diverse and digitally connected as India, this has opened the door for many first-time founders.
