For @NewStatesman I spoke to Natalie (name changed) about why the police and probation services failed to track her ex-partner down after she reported him for breaching multiple restraining orders, its woeful performance, and the legacy of austerity. newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…

At the root of this is a belief that a powerful ruling class naturally possesses a skillset that is pre-ordained, rather than a result of them having had certain material/cultural/social/educational advantages in life. If he thinks the working class are genetically predisposed to low-waged toil & low influence then he should say so. That’s the implication here, anyway.

The row-back on plans for the Bill to have day-one protections against unfair dismissal has caused outrage. Particulary among Labour MPs, unions and workers; some deem it a manifesto breach. I put all that to @nowak_paul, General Secretary of the TUC: newstatesman.com/politics/labou…

As immigration and income tax spur on next week’s budget talks, spare a thought for child poverty. It’s increased in the UK, but not in Scotland, adding more pressure on Reeves to abolish the Tories’ two-child benefit cap. Read my story below: newstatesman.com/spotlight/2025…

I've written this week's New Statesman cover story on how much trouble Keir Starmer is in. newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…
The New Statesman@NewStatesman

WHAT KEIR WON’T HEAR by @PronouncedAlva Keir Starmer is in trouble. Behind the Prime Minister’s back in the Parliamentary Labour Party, there is now widespread mockery, sarcasm, name-calling and the darkest of gallows humour. MPs are worn down by 16 months of unpopular policies and unforced errors, from winter fuel to the welfare debacle. Many are resigned to serving just a single term in parliament. Some are nervous and embarrassed to admit they are Labour MPs when out socially. Even the smallest of frustrations sends MPs apoplectic. In today’s Labour Party, there is constant, fevered discussion about the prospect of a leadership challenge in May or in the aftermath of the Budget, about the possible contenders and the exact mechanism by which it would be done. With the party hitting its lowest-ever poll rating at just 17 per cent, many are no longer willing to overlook the flaws they perceive in their leader. One MP put it starkly: “He’s squandering the opportunity of a generation. We might not be in power again for decades.” Everything that happens in the coming weeks and months will be underpinned by this reality, as the government does all it can to weather the inevitable storm of the Budget, in which it will seek to impose new tax rises on the country from a position of almost unparalleled unpopularity. “We don’t do regicide,” is the mantra for many in Labour. A senior No 10 source says Starmer would fight any leadership challenge against him. But still, one Labour grandee recently left No 10 in bewilderment, and told senior colleagues: “Those people are in denial.”

"Poor mental health costs England around £300bn every year." That cost, shockingly, is nearly twice the total budget of the NHS, writes @HarryClrke #Echobox=1762157907" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">newstatesman.com/spotlight/2025…
