For anyone interested in Victor Grayson I’ve started to update the old website victorgrayson.com and will be putting some more useful stuff for researchers on there.

#OTD 1883. Clement Attlee born in Putney
On his 80th birthday in 1963 he sat down with ITV to reflect on the state of the world
He argued that Britain could not be isolated on defence - but warned against joining a European Union which was a “dictatorship of civil servants”.

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice I can confirm they never impressed girls!
English

@Harry__Taylor__ @memorialdevice Amazing. I had a similar collection (plus every Select magazine and 2000AD), but chucked them all when I went to uni thinking “This will NOT impress girls! And nobody will ever pay money for them, so…”
English

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice Wow! Hold on I’ve got my old mags somewhere
English

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice That’d be right, I was 16. Yep, maybe they seemed so great in that moment because there was so little else bar The Strokes and that first Libertines album and ep…The Streets first album too was a revelation. Then The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Walkmen etc etc etc
English

@Harry__Taylor__ @memorialdevice Highly Evolved came out in 2002. Must have seen them live 3 times that year. It says a lot that you've never once felt "I think I'll stick that amazing Vines song on!"
English

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice Haven’t listened to them for years but I loved that album saw them live at the time…2003??
English

@Harry__Taylor__ @memorialdevice God, the Vines?! Maybe the hottest band in the UK for about 8 months, and I fell for them 100%, seeing them live multiple times. Now, I dont think they had one truly great song (and few very good ones)
English

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice Yep agreed. I remember buying the album in Our Price heavily discounted. Seem to remember new music being pretty stale until The Vines and The Strokes a couple of years later then The Libertines
English

@Harry__Taylor__ @memorialdevice The 'What Difference Does it Make' after their 'This Charming Man', the 'Live Forever' after their 'Supersonic'.
Not all of these are direct followups, but showed that big new things had more than one trick
English

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice That and Oh Jim (that weird space suit video)
English

@Harry__Taylor__ @memorialdevice (I do actually think To Earth With Love is a bit of a classic)
The album was a big nothing though
English

@LeesonPalmer @memorialdevice Couple of half decent singles but can’t remember much else
English

@memorialdevice If you were a teenager in Britain in 1999, there’s a fair to decent chance you remember Gay Dad as possibly the most overhyped band of our time

English

You’re talking about France, a rich country in the European Union that a vast majority of your party members want to rejoin. Why do you think the people you’ve met are risking their lives to escape it?
Zack Polanski@ZackPolanski
I've spent three days in Calais & it's horrendous. People living in disgusting conditions. Our Government is spending £476m on the militarisation of the border. We must divert that money to a humanitarian response that treats people with basic dignity. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Zack Polanski’s recent comments about “wiping bums” and the care sector prompted me to come out of early retirement to offer some clarity and perspective on an issue that deserves far more understanding.

@wireinthebrain Understood. Appreciate that! A rare sane discsussion on this platform!
English

@Harry__Taylor__ A distinction not made in Magna Carta. “Judged by your peers” is the quote usually used to mean trial by jury.
English

As someone who’s served as a jury foreman in a serious trial, I’d like to know what the “myth” is.
Natalie Fleet MP@NatalieFleetMP
Spot the difference: Court Reform Gov benches: Women fighting for swifter justice for victims let down by those opposite Opposition: Men in suits clinging on to a Magna Carta myth… Glad to be on side of @sarahsackman & gov, fighting for victims already failed for too long
English

@wireinthebrain Ah I see, but aren’t magistrates courts reserved for minor offences? Anything serious has a jury?
English

@Harry__Taylor__ The myth is that jury trials are guaranteed by Magna Carta in all cases. If that was true, magistrates courts wouldn’t exist.
