@CasualEffects Curious about where the largest bottlenecks were here? Were they technical issues or human ones like moderation and safety?

So, yes, it took an hour to implement SetVertex(). The back end systems to deeply and thoughtfully make dynamic content interoperate with sync, physics, content creation, safety and civility took person years of investment to build.

Why did it take Roblox 17 years to release dynamic meshes? Isn't Mesh:SetVertex() easy and obvious? Answer:

@nafonsopt I agree. The ability to reliably diff and merge visual coding tools is often lacking or missing.

The reason it looks good is because they appear to have removed all jitter from the rigid body simulation. Jitter or "high frequency alternating impulses" are the number one artifact in animation in general, and physics in particular. Mechanically, all good animation is about selling the sense of mass. Heavy objects in real life almost NEVER jitter because that means a rapidly fluctuating velocity which requires a huge amount of energy: Energy = 1/2 Mass * Velocity^2. Humans know this intuitively and our lizard brain immediately recognizes the "heaviness" of an object based on it's resistance to changes in velocity.

I can't get over how good the physics is in this game.

The last few years have solidified what AI means in the tech world, so to avoid any confusion (no we're not creating an all-knowing simulation intelligence… yet) we've renamed Havok AI to Havok Navigation. Same great games middleware, slightly less confusing name.

On the way home from GDC. My first since covid. So nourishing to see the dedication and passion from everyone despite tough times. Apologies if I didn't get to catch up with you despite my lame promises.

Today we're presenting a talk on what we learned integrating our Physics, Cloth, and Navigation middleware products into #UnrealEngine5 If you use UE5, are thinking of integrating your own tools, or just want to say hi, drop by Room 2009 at 11:30 #GDC2024 schedule.gdconf.com/session/lesson…

We might have taken testing ragdolls with real world physics a bit too far this time. But there’s always space for one last demo while packing for #GDC2024 !

@PierreTerdiman Isn't that just a testament to the success of the middleware? How few pieces of software actually reach this stage - I think its super rare.

After all these years working on the same middleware, I saw every single part of it becoming "the bottleneck" for somebody. You cannot optimize the "important" bits and call it a day. Everything eventually becomes "important" for some of your clients.

@realBobbyHealy @MannaAero What influences the pattern? Assume delivers originate at the hub e.g. Shopping area but why are the paths not straight lines from there?
