#PT582 #CC I think US is interesting and I can honestly say I have never seen it used before this week in lab. This makes me think there is other treatments to achieve the same outcome that may work better. I think I would steer my patients from using it rather promote exercise.

#PT582 #AJ I think I would turn to NMES once strengthening exercises do not prove to be beneficial or working. I think I would approach musculoskeletal by having higher intensity to get a good contraction but treat neurological with a lower intensity to assist it fire the muscle.

#PT582 #EB I think Hippotherapy is a fantastic intervention to improve balance. Patients often will probably feel discouraged when starting to begin therapy, so I would use hippotherapy near the beginning of treatment so that way to make it a more enjoyable experience.

#PT582 #RI I do not think there are any ethical complications during training, but if they managed to use the technology during their competition it could provide an unfair advantage. I think cheating would be if it taught us to go beyond what our muscle could do anatomically.

#PT582 #RT I think education is key in this case. Having very simplistic visuals can help show our patients the benefits of exercise. I would like to try to motivate my pts by asking them to just start small. Maybe only like 10 min a day and then eventually over time increase it.

#PT582 #TM I think we could start with supine and have them do dead bugs and then progress it into a TheraBand resistance exercise. We can progress that into a sitting position and can have them sit on an exercise ball and use pullies to strengthen their core.

#JT #PT582 I find neuroplasticity fascinating and there can be so many variables we can change. We could manipulate the surface they are on to make it more challenging or easier. Same can be said for the complexity of the motions, we can add more motions as the pt's grow.

#MD #PT582 I think botox is an interesting modality, and can definitely be beneficial if paired with active exercise. If we can reduce the hypertonicity for a short period and be able to correct the factors contributing to it then maybe they wont have to get botox a second time.

#PT582 #LB I think it has a role in every population. I think how we utilize it is going to be much different depending on the population though. The more active individuals may use it as a way to build hypertrophy faster. Depending on the treatment I think both groups can grow.

#PT582 #KD I think mental practice is actually something we dont use enough. I think it is a great way to mentally prime Pt's to perform an action. I think it can be beneficial if we can make what they visualize actually happen shortly after. Athletes use it in their sports often

@NathanTurley4 #NT #PT582 I think there is always times that we will have to change our method of practice for each individual patient. Non-PNF exercises may serve maybe more active patients better and PNF may serve patients that are more sedentary better.

@bonniediamond53 #PT582 #BD I think there would be a stronger carry-over from plyometrics to power. Just bc if we decrease the time of the exercise it will result in more power. I also think it can be done at any time in a workout as long as we don’t see decrease in quality of the exercise.

Thank you for a great discussion on how to improve our young athletes training regimen and what steps need to be taken to do so. #PT582 #HH

@TsaiJames_ Do you think it is our place to reach out in the community to help educate? Because unfortunately most of the time we only meet the athletes after they experience an injury. #PT582 #HH

@HaydenHoekstra All three components should be present in all young athletes. By simply explaining pain is not = to gain, we can help keep the young ones safe. It will be our job as PTs to guide parents through research so they can understand it, & also give them their own resources. #PT582 #HH

@kolbyareed I agree. I find athletes also pick up on stuff they find important very quickly. So how can we show the importance of proper methods? #PT582 #HH

@HaydenHoekstra Having a mix. We want to develop a well rounded athlete/human. As long as the volume is progressed and managed in a healthy manner they should be able to do both. Children may be able to learn skills quicker than adults so they should be able to keep up with proper form

#PT582 #HH This article has a "Resistance Training Roadmap" for children who wish to. Ideas are having an educated coach, having proper form, progressing slowly, and targeting all muscle groups. I think incorporating all muscle groups makes the most well rounded athlete later on

@JordynMaxwell2 I agree to keeping it fun is important. I think this can help with burnout among athletes as well. Who and how can we educate about proper methods? #PT582 #HH

There is a large body of evidence supporting the benefits of resistance training in young athletes. I think some key elements to this include not over training, making exercises age-appropriate, and ensuring that activities are both safe and fun #PT582 #HH pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24149422/

@ds_DPT I really like this approach. Do you think we could help educate parents some way on this? #PT582 #HH

@HaydenHoekstra #HH #PT582 Mixing various training types will lead to lower injury rates as long as those activities are introduced gradually into the program. It is important to let the individual then decide themselves which sport or training method they gravitate to over time.

@TsaiJames_ When you say supplemented do you mean entirely or in addition to ST? How do you think we can as PTs educate coaches and parents? #PT582 #HH

@HaydenHoekstra Purpose, safety, and dosage, are key. Too much of any type of training will be detrimental. Although strength training can be safe for adolescents, it should be supplemented with aerobics and rest. Education for coaches/parents is vital to avoid injury. #PT582 #HH

@jacquedompier I totally agree! I believe teaching recovery is super important in keeping athletes engaged and active. How else do you think we can improve their mental acuity and increase their mental health through exercise? #PT582 #HH

@HaydenHoekstra #PT582 #HH 2/2 the muscles, bones, ligaments...anything you are trying to improve (not to mention the emotional/mental toll). You can't reap the benefits--no matter how "good," "specific," or "top-notch" the workout is!

@Riley_shae98 I agree! This is a bit off topic but how can we make sure athletes stay engaged in their respective sports? Would recovery training be beneficial? #PT582 #HH

#PT582 #HH Concurrent exercises have shown to be beneficial in youth in comparison to ST & ET alone. It's important for them to experience all sides of exercise not only for the varying benefits, but so they can find what they enjoy doing most. Lifelong activity= healthy society!
