#CODay “… my Socialism is based on a belief in the sacredness of human life and the unity of all human lives. War is the antithesis of Socialism…To participate in war would be to outrage my conscientious and most deeply held convictions. I cannot do it.” Fenner Brockway, 1916

Celebrating the birthday of William Morris, born on this day in 1834. He played a central role in the Arts and Crafts Movement, championing the value of handmade craftsmanship at a time when the Victorian era was defined by industrial progress.

BIG NEWS *INCREDIBLE DISCOVERY* Kathleen Pettigrew, the real Miss Moneypenny, private papers FOUND! A year ago I rushed down to #Sidmouth in beautiful Devon because the museum had received an anonymous donation. I couldn’t believe it. The trailblazing MI6 officer’s entire life contained within one simple storage box, a treasure trove of personal photographs, diaries, passports, mysterious reports and papers, maps, foreign currency, a plethora of personal, private and secret letters, as well as important MI6 ephemera never before seen. You can read all about the discovery in the paperback of #HerSecretService in the new Postscript. You can also look forward to future posts about the amazing items in the collection. I am delighted that the collection has recently been acquired by the Sid Vale Association and will be on future display at Sidmouth Museum for all to enjoy! I am speaking about Kathleen Pettigrew in Sidmouth tomorrow afternoon, Thursday 12 March. Event details in post below ⬇️ Please do join us. @wnbooks @NorthbankTalent @SidmouthMuseum @BBCDevon @sidmouthherald @DevonLiveNews @JeremyVineOn5 #womenshistorymonth #MI6 #spyhistory #herstory

Young and old, bold and brilliant, pioneers and trailblazers. The women of British Intelligence did their duty quietly and loyally. They never sought recognition. It was an honour to share their stories in my debut book, ‘Her Secret Service: The Forgotten Women of British Intelligence’. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2026 #spyhistory #Herstory #WomensDay #WomensDay2026 #WomensHistoryMonth

An anti-war ad from a decade ago is going viral. Because the same wars keep happening-for the same interests, at the same cost, with the same lies

After two years, I can finally shout from the rooftop about the opportunity of a lifetime. I am proud to play a small part in this epic 20-part WW2 series with Tom Hanks, coming to your screens this May. Trailers don't get much better than this. WWII remains the most devastating and defining conflict in history 80 years on. Now, The @HISTORY Channel's series "World War II with Tom Hanks" reexamines the war through the lens of a new century. We proudly supported this series, which premieres May 25. bit.ly/4r3Erht

EVENT Sunday, 8 March 2026 It is an honour to be invited back to @bletchleypark to celebrate International Women's Day 2026 #IWD2026 #WomensHistoryMonth Join me and a stellar line-up of historians for a special symposium 'Women who write history', focusing on the women who influenced history, including those whose work went unrecognised due to secrecy. By 1944, an incredible 75% of the Bletchley workforce were women. Several hundred worked for MI6, Britain's foreign intelligence service. They were initially based in offices on the first floor of the mansion, such as room 23, where codists such as Ena Molesworth encoded and decoded messages to agents behind enemy lines and to officers working under consular cover within neutral countries. Their stories are told in 'Her Secret Service: The Forgotten Women of British Intelligence' (now available in paperback) @wnbooks @NorthbankTalent Bletchley Park is a very special place for intelligence historians. Every time I visit, I can hear the constant tapping of heeled shoes walking down the corridors in the huts and on the first floor of the mansion, all with the same dark green internal doors, displaying only numbers and never names for security purposes. Further event details and how to book can be found here: bletchleypark.org.uk/event/women-wh… See you there!

We have a copy of the Parish Magazine from 1909. It has 2 pages of adverts for Saxilby businesses. I thought it fun if I matched the adverts with photos from our ‘John Wilson Collection’. Here’s a couple for you now, with more to follow soon.
