My latest article on intelligence oversight in the U.K. out now in @IntelNatSecJnl focuses on the role of Ministers in providing accountability - ‘Familiar but not intimate’: Executive oversight of the UK intelligence and security agencies tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Have to suspect that some of my erstwhile senior managers, who are usually so keen to turn every list into a league table, might be less keen to see how far up this one they have driven their institution.

@DonaldClark @timeshighered Less than 50% have found a job and less than 40% have found a job in HE. Around 10% have found a job elsewhere. That doesn’t look particularly healthy to me.

This graph looks quite healthy. In a sector where foreign student numbers are dropping, demographic effects hitting, so revenues falling and costs rising, the fact that the vast majority found jobs in HE is surprising. Some shrinkage is inevitable. What's missing are those who found jobs elesewhere.

From @timeshighered Staff in UK higher ed, including at my own institution, are being put under intolerable pressure to accept voluntary redundancy with little prospect of new jobs particularly in HE. Time for overpaid university managers to end the cuts & prioritise saving jobs.

Today is the last day hereditary peers can sit in the House of Lords. Despite their removal the House of Lords remains the only upper house of any bicameral parliament in the world to be larger than its lower house.

The @timeshighered redundancy survey offers a searing insight into the toxic state of UK higher ed. The causes of the crisis in UK HE are both national and local but the treatment of loyal staff by the institutions they have served is sickening.

Intelligence & Security Committee has completed its review of all the papers provided to it in relation to Mandelson’s vetting the bulk of which it only received on Monday this week. I’m far from convinced this has been a good use of ISC time but it has worked commendably fast.

Extract from the government’s statement today on the progress in reviewing the Mandelson vetting papers. The Intelligence and Security Committee should today receive the remaining papers it is to review, over 300 documents.

@adefty Can @X provide a magnifying facility as so many documents like the ones above on Windows 11 are so small as to be unreadable to many, like us oldies.

The Intelligence & Security Committee has published an update on its review of the Mandelson papers - it is scathing. This is a significant task for which the ISC had had to set aside all other work but the government has yet to provide the committee with all the documents.

This is astonishing - none of the first batch of documents provided to the ISC related to Mandelson’s vetting and the first two documents relating to vetting were only provided to the committee on Monday of this week.

Just out of an emergency @ucu meeting @unilincoln - large turnout despite many members being on leave reflects deep concern about latest voluntary severance scheme announced on Monday and what may follow. Widely expressed lack of confidence in senior management.

A sadly familiar story here about the failure of university governance “…universities and their leaders have some degree of agency to make choices, good or bad. Universities may all be responding to the market or to government policy, but they do not respond uniformly.”
