Is it just me or is there no WrestleMania hype this year? The ESPN subscription is a real turn off.

@aakashgupta This is from Order of the Phoenix. It’s when he’s possessing Harry. It’s bad because it feels very out of place to have Voldy randomly in front of a Green Screen. Nothing really to do with makeup or VFX. Everything to do with Screenplay and Direction.

The VFX story behind this shot is wild. Ralph Fiennes refused prosthetics for Voldemort. He told the producers he needed his full facial range to act the role properly. So every single frame of Voldemort across four films required artists to digitally erase his nose and rebuild snake-like slits in post-production. The process: 16 tracking dots glued to a latex mold on his face. Every shooting angle separately recorded for the VFX team. Then frame by frame, artists painted out his real nose and composited the flat, slit-nostril look on top. The VFX supervisor compared it to creating a Renaissance painting. The graveyard scene in Goblet of Fire took 12 days to shoot. Fiennes had a hard 2-hour limit in the makeup chair (bald cap, body paint, vein transfers, contacts, fake teeth, fake nails). And because Daniel Radcliffe was 14, child labor laws capped his on-set hours, so every take was precious. When your lead actor can only work limited hours and your villain's face requires manual digital reconstruction in every frame, some shots are going to slip through with rougher compositing than others. This particular frame catches the nose removal at its weakest. The lighting flattens the CG blend, and the wide-open mouth stretches the tracking geometry past what the 2005 software handled cleanly. The result looks more like a PlayStation 2 cutscene than a $150M blockbuster. Fiennes was right to refuse the prosthetics, though. The physical performance he delivered across those four films turned Voldemort into one of the most recognized villains in cinema history. One rough frame in a graveyard is a small price for that.

@molecularmusing I’m an engineer, not a programmer. I enjoy writing code but my dopamine colts from solving problems.

I find this extremely worrying, with many of people I respect saying things like "I no longer write code" or "let LLMs do it". Why did you start programming? Was it never the journey for you, but only the goal? I genuinely want to understand this, I seem to be the odd one out.

@chopper248 @merseyrail Did you perhaps use Apple/Google Pay for one tap, and the physical Card for the other? The way Mobile pay works is that your Phone is its own payment card which then immediately charged your bank card. Always tap the same way at any entry/exit system.

Plus, of course, there's the issue of team skills. If Fallout 76 & Starfield are other stuff, and now you want to go back to Oblivion/Skyrim style... it's been 15 years since you made those. Many key figures associated with that golden age of 2002-2013 have long since moved on.

@MattLismore Your experience with ADHD is valid, but it isn’t universal. A diagnosis doesn’t make someone an expert on how the condition affects others, or a referee on who is “genuine” enough to need support.

This is so bang on! I have ADHD, never claimed a single benefit and was diagnosed aged 9. I work in an elite sector in fintech & have worked, consistently from 16 through to now, even while at 6th form and University. The people conning the state in the name of ADHD do a disservice to all of us with the condition.
