Crosstown Showdown
Crosstown Showdown@xtownshowdown·
Cooper and Highlands, which met in week two of the @Skyline_Chili Crosstown Showdown presented by @mercy_health Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, both posted convincing wins in the opening round of the Kentucky State Football Tournament last Friday. This week, when the Bluegrass postseason heads into its second week, there are 11 Northern Kentucky teams spread over all six classes playing Friday night looking to advance to the regional final and move closer to a trip to Lexington and the respective state finals. Here is a look at those games: Class A Four NKY small-school teams will put winning streaks on the line in a pair of games Friday night.  Unbeaten @Hcindiansfb (11-0), which has held its last eight opponents to six or fewer points with three shutouts, meets Newport (7-4), which has won four games in a row, at 7 p.m. at Thomas More University – home field for Holy Cross. @TBredsFB (7-4), which is riding a six-game winning streak, meets Campbell County rival @brossart_fball (6-5), which has won its last four to advance to the regional semifinals.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills. Class 2A @BHSTigerFBall (9-1), looking to win its fifth state title in the last six years, will play for the first time in a couple weeks after advancing with a forfeit win last Friday.  The Tigers, whose lone setback is to 4A Covington Catholic on September 19, haven’t lost since. The Tigers take a six-game unbeaten streak into a rematch with @WVBearcatFB (5-6).  Beechwood won the regular-season meeting between the two, 69-0, on the road.   Walton-Verona has won four of its last five.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Fort Mitchell. Class 3A @LMHSAthletics is the other undefeated NKY team with Holy Cross.  The Juggernauts (11-0) opponent this week is Henry County (5-6), which they faced on October 9 in Erlanger and posted a 41-6 victory. After finishing 9-3 last season and falling to Russell, 21-20, in this round, Lloyd is vying for a trek to the regional final.  The Juggernauts’ defense has been solid this season, holding opponents to seven or few points in six games.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Erlanger. Class 4A Covington Catholic and Highlands, huge gridiron rivals through the years, are back in the 4A mix after Highlands made it to the 5A state semifinals the last two years, falling to Cooper, before competing a level lower entering this season. Both are anticipating deep postseason runs and, depending on how the RPI works out, the two could meet in the state final assuming they both keep winning.  But it won’t be easy in a deep and talented 4A class at the state level. @CovCathFootball (8-3), which played a rugged schedule with its only losses to 6A Ryle, 26-20, in week one; unbeaten Elder, which plays in the Ohio DI regional semifinals Friday, 28-20, on the road in week two; and to Highlands, 31-28, also on the road. Since the loss in Fort Thomas, the Colonels have won four straight games.  CovCath, which has won eight of nine, hits the road again and travel to face unbeaten Johnson Central (11-0) at 7 p.m. in Paintsville.  Franklin County is the only other undefeated 4A team. @HighlandsFB (9-2) gets to remain at home and welcome Ashland Paul Blazer (7-4) at 7:30 p.m.  The Bluebirds have won three in a row and six of seven, the lone loss at Elder.  Highlands’ only other setback is at Boyle County, 21-20. Class 5A @CooperFootball (8-3) is looking to advance to the state final for the third consecutive season.  The Jaguars’ most successful senior class, which has posted 34 victories the last two-plus seasons, is preparing for its annual meeting with Scott County (8-3). Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. in Union, with the two schools meeting for the fourth consecutive year in the state playoffs.  Scott County won the first game in 2022, but Cooper has won the last two games – including 45-20 last season. The Jaguars will have to stop Scott County’s infamous wing-T offense, which has been scoring plenty of points this season.  The Cardinals’ three losses are to Madison Central, Highlands and Woodford County, 57-50. Both Cooper and Scott County lost to Highlands by 14 points, and the two teams have identical records.  Cooper is well tested, with its three losses coming to Cincinnati Anderson (11-0), and a pair of 9-2 teams in Highlands and Louisville Depont Manual. Class 6A A year ago, Ryle joined Cooper in their respective finals to give the Boone County Schools a pair of finalists.  While Cooper fell to Bowling Green for the second straight year, Ryle was defeated by perennial power Louisville Trinity in the last game. @Ryle_Football (8-3) hopes to get back to Lexington again and standing in the way Friday is Louisville Ballard (5-6).  Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. in Union, where Ryle.  It has been a season of streaks for the Raiders, who are getting back to being healthy again. The Raiders opened with two victories, including 26-20 against Covington Catholic, then dropped three in a row before rebounding to win the last six – pitching three shutouts – to take plenty of momentum into the regional semifinals.
