Many of the groups which settled America came specifically because they were driven primarily by religious reasons. One such example with a greatly outsized impact are the French Huguenots, the Protestants who were driven out of France by threat of extermination. In their lineage includes men such as George Washington, who on his maternal side is of Huguenot descent. Further, on just the act of colonizing America, this can be understood as driven heavily by something of an arms race between Protestant and Catholic Europe, in a contest against the Spanish and Portuguese empires to push back against the world order which was attempted to be formed by the Treaty of Tordesillas whereby the entire world was to be split between these two powers by the pope. The defeat of the Spanish Armada allowed Protestant England to get a foothold in North America that they might prevent this from being actualized. It’s utterly undeniable that Americas founding stock, our culture, our government, was a Protestant creation which had impact on who and what we were. This becomes quite clear once you read the state constitutions of the era, where for example North Carolina barred anyone who denied the truth of the Protestant Religion from holding office. They were hardly the only one, and prior to the founding era many states outright banned priests and/or Catholic Mass from their states. All of this is to say that what you are receiving pushback from are founding stock Americans. Men who can trace their roots back to before 1776, who still maintain the religious beliefs of their ancestors. And your attempt to erase this is cut from the same cloth as those who try to say that America was founded by Haitians and Somalians. It’s not as egregious, but it’s still insulting, ahistorical, and an attempt at erasing our heritage in order to insert yourself as a latecomer Polish Catholic in the same category as the founding stock, which you are clearly not as rooted in. You ought to instead be more respectful and grateful to our heritage and our history which my ancestors graciously allowed you to participate in well after we had colonized the land and established our sovereignty. America was, is, and will always be Protestant.
