@GuruAnaerobic @Brady_H Yeah pretty reasonable thing to try. I don't like drinking coffee in the afternoon just doesn't taste the same as the morning.

I realised a few years ago that afternoon coffee negatively affects my sleep, so I don't drink it after noon. This never used to be the case when I was younger. If people have problems with sleep it's an idea to try only having tea/coffee in the morning. Can swap to decaf later in the day.

A top African marathon runner has a VO2max 50% higher than a hunter-gatherer. BMI's and body fat are similar. Why do you think that is?

@ajwodecki @Mangan150 @DrGrimmMD I agree with PD completely but also completely agree with your point and I would cite Weston A Price. Eating carbs whilst sitting indoors under junk light all year is not doing anyone any good.

What's the smart way to think about carbs? Big difference between: 1) Recognizing that almost every crappy food choice contains carb 2) Claiming that all carbs are “bad”. Let's dive in:

@MaxGulhaneMD Great find. Quite bemusing that the authors didn't explore or even speculate on the mechanisms by which cryotherapy could increase circulating vitamin D. 🤦‍♂️

@CoffeeBlackMD When you work with someone who is over 300 lbs, walking is most definitely cardio. I've had people massively improve their health and reduce their weight by going from 2 to 8k steps a day.

Your HR might not tick above 40 on flat ground at a walk but I promise for many of my obese and or pulmonary disease patients, getting streps *is* cardio. And for chronic lungers, might be as fast as they’ll ever go for practical physiology reasons. Arbitrarily turning movement into a cool kids club based on personal definitions seems counterproductive. This is stepping directly into the same dog shit as “athlete”. The physiologically gifted really should be more encouraging and inclusive with their language and definitions IF the goal is getting more people moving (or lifting). Maybe … it’s not? If I had a patient come in to see me and be excited about their new 5000 steps per day behavior change, which is a huge improvement from 1500 per day, and I was, “Psssht! That’s not even doing REAL steps let alone cardio!!” … I LOSE that person for good, forever.
Brady Holmer@Brady_H

Steps are not “cardio.”

@anymanfitness Glad your alright. Either alone are pretty good for you. But going from hot to cold so quickly or vice versa puts severe stress on the cardiovascular system. Study below russian coal miners increased risk of MI. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2718115/

3 weeks ago, I hopped into the cold plunge at my gym. I ended up in the ER. The doctors and nurses said this happens very frequently with the rise in popularity of cold plunges and ice baths. If you're a "cold plunge" guy or gal, there's some things you need to know. You can read about what happened to me here: anymanfitness.com/nwa-archive/ju…

Is the period of using fat women on the cover of health and fitness magazines over? [I.e. healthy at any size is dying].

@seanymac94 Tap water has less plastic, gets a bad rap though. Probably better with a filter. There was a study recently showing glass had a load too. Stick to the beer, like medieval times.

@HealthCoachCP Annoys me how many plastic bottles of water I drink. No real handy access to glass bottles when on the move a lot. Tara that literally fucking everything is designed to poison us somehow, eh?

Interesting study here. Absent from the discussion is the need to be in infrared light from the sun or artificial for most of the day to power up your mitochondria. Walking, training, eating, working outdoors is the easiest way to achieve this. It's very simple.

@jesecamilo @gregmushen Agree here. One can live just fine without fibre (I eat fibre) but you can't live well without sunlight.

@gregmushen Being outside during sunrise is actually number one. Getting sufficient sun exposure during the day according to your skin type is number two. Everything else is downstream.

@GuruAnaerobic Counting calories ultimately leads you to the latter. Eat mainly nutrient dense high satiety food to lose/maintain weight. Avoid UPF. Meat, Eggs, Fish, Seafood, Dairy, Offal, Fruit, Veg, Nuts, Seeds, Legumes, Tubers etc..

Some people need to lose weight by tracking calories and weighing out portions, others simply do it by eating less/changing what they eat. IMO, even though the former will lose weight using 'data', they will have weight problems in the future if they don't develop an intuitive/natural data free way of eating. For long-term health the objective is to be lifestyle driven not data driven. Use data initially, if you need it - but not being able to control your life without data means your default way of living is intrinsically out of whack.

So, Zone 2 training has been over-hyped - who knew? There's nothing wrong with Z2 in a mixed-training approach, however, when anything becomes a fad, it never lives up to the hype.
Kristi Storoschuk@k_storoschuk

It's out!! I am so excited to share this review addressing popular beliefs and claims within popular media around Zone 2 training. I feel very privileged to have worked on this with my amazing co-authors, Dr. Brendon Gurd, Andres Moran-MacDonald, and @gibalam Social media has the power to change the way people behave, so it's important that we stay evidence based.
