I’ve never read any other editions, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I really enjoyed this one. You can ignore the annotations and read it straight, but it’s nice that they are there for some context. It’s never “interpretive”. Never telling you what to take from a particular letter or passage. But some bits in the original may reference older literary works or are made in reference to current events of the time. So it helps to have an aid in the margins if you feel you need it. Also, it includes forwards from previous editions and “Screwtape Proposes a Toast” (maybe not in its entirety?), which CS Lewis wrote in a reprisal of the character years later (and which may be the best part of the entire edition).
