@harryph @CatalunyaAC Rather than laziness I think it all comes down to whether one considers Islamophobia to be extreme or not.

@Hedgecoe @CatalunyaAC This is the problem! "Far right" implies "Neo-Nazi/fascist" - there certainly are plenty of such parties on the continent. But it is also used more broadly to smear Conservatives/libertarians/populists. Not a useful term really. I do think it is a bit lazy.

The BBC's @Hedgecoe describes @CatalunyaAC as "far right." I don't see anything in their policy programme to justify the label. aliancacatalana.cat There is a lot of this lazy journalism when it comes to reporting on foreign political parties. bbc.co.uk/news/world-eur….

@harryph @CatalunyaAC She feels the Islamic religion threatens Catalan/Western culture, which is a common sentiment on the far right. Many reputable moderate media [and not "lazy" journalists] in Spain describe AC as such. However, "Neo-Nazi/fascist" are not words I used.

@Hedgecoe @CatalunyaAC I think she's pro-women's rights and gay rights and feels the Islamic religion threatens them. The Party's immigration policy favours the integration of legal immigrants and the deportation of illegal immigrants. Right wing? Yes. "Far right"/Neo-Nazi/fascist? No.

@harryph @CatalunyaAC I'm not sure how closely you have researched the party, but I have gone to Ripoll and interviewed Orriols. My conclusion, having also spoken to voters and political scientists about this, was that she is far right.

@harryph @CatalunyaAC I don't use the term lightly, but Aliança Catalana's leader, Silvia Orriols, has described herself as "totally Islamophobic" and called for "the recovery of the cultural, ethical and demographic control of our homeland".
