We anticipate that the Orion spacecraft has now departed the lunar sphere of influence — this is when the gravitational pull of the Moon is stronger than the gravitational pull of Earth. The Artemis II crew are headed home. Splashdown will take place on Friday, April 10.

This will surely go down at one of the all-time iconic images of human space exploration. I was listening to the live feed last night and the astronaunts not really having the words to describe the view - and i can well understand why after seeing this incredible image. Four other planets are also in shot. Neptune is mid-way between Saturn and Mars but too faint to be seen. On the Earthshine illuminated portion of the moon several prominent craters are seen. Just below centre is Humboldt, while just above about half visible is the edge of Mare Smythii. Both these areas can just about be seen from Earth during favourable lunar librations of that area.

Why do the Artemis II astronauts keep calling their Orion spacecraft, "Integrity"? The crew chose this name for their home away from home because it "embodies the foundation of trust, respect, candor, and humility" of the teams behind the Artemis II mission.

What kind of shitbag do you need to be to support the President literally Trolling & Crashing Out like he's a terminally online weirdo? These posts arent for Iran. They are for his brain damaged dude bros online. They get to laugh & cheer these posts as "winning" while getting fucked over here at home. Its either that, or our fraud-in-chief is actually shitting himself over this mess he's got us in and is having a very Public Meltdown, losing his mind. 🤦‍♂️

The world stopped to watch Artemis II. Moments like this remind us what is possible and inspire the next generation to dream bigger and take us even further. We are just getting started on this grand adventure. It is time to start believing again.

One of the recent lunar views taken from Artemis shows one of the most fascinating lunar surface features that is only ever partly visible from here on Earth. The giant multi-ring impact basin Mare Orientale in nicely seen in the view taken by the astronauts, and the inset image shows the basin imaged by Lunar Orbiter 4. From Earth, this feature is located within the western libration zone - only visible when the wobble of the moon briefly brings it partially into view at the western limb. In a comment below i've also posted a mosaic i shot some years back of Mare Orientale during its maximum presentation toward Earth.

One last look at Earth before we reach the Moon. This view of the Earth was captured on April 5, the fourth day of the Artemis II mission, from inside the Orion spacecraft. The four astronauts will reach their closest approach of the Moon tomorrow, April 6.

Liftoff of Artemis II! The first human mission around the moon since the Apollo era. A gorgeous launch into clear skies about an hour before sunset, on the first attempt. I set this one hoping it would launch in the early minutes of the window. Photo: United Launch Alliance
