@holybulll Okay thank you for explaining. I do hope Townend didn’t feel anything. The GN has been a brutal viewing the last 4 years. If it turns out the leading jockey in the sport knew his horse was injured and rode to the finish anyway, and we get a similar GN, would be a bad look

Only Paul knows the real answer, but an injury in the hindend is harder to feel at gallop than in front. Especially at the end of a race when the horse’s action isn’t going to be as easy and fluid as early on It’s much more black and white when the horse is trotting, as it’s a two beat gait where they move symmetrically and bear weight evenly. Sounds like the injury was his spine (although that can mean a lot of different things). A horse feeling sore in their back is a very different feel to a broken leg or tendon injury and far harder to determine the severity

Sickening to see that with Gold Dancer. Really not what the horse deserved or what this Aintree meeting needed. But in Townend’s defence; it’s very hard to feel hind end lameness in a horse at gallop. I’ve ridden nearly every day of my life (and have a veterinarian as a father) and couldn’t reliably say that I’d be able to feel if a tired horse went off behind. The only pace you can reliably feel lameness is trot, and that’s when he seemed to notice the issue and jumped off as soon as he could. If the horse had a complete fracture that would be one thing, but that lameness could just as easily have been a muscle tweak as something so devastating
