@Zennistrad @RobinPoedev @StillBRS listen I don't think a lot of people here are gonna disagree with you on the claim that capitalism isn't the best way to make games, but also robin clearly isn't talking about our toxic industry rn, he is just talking about the art, which isn't worse just because it's multiplayer

@RobinPoedev @StillBRS It's also a matter of a lot of these companies acting like organized criminal cartels with regards to their IP, making threats against unofficial game preservation efforts Like when Atlus sued fans for trying to keep the Shin Megami Tensei MMO alive pcgamer.com/atlus-is-suing…

@frostsebaot @RobinPoedev @Zennistrad @StillBRS Will saying that I think we should fight this issue by using public funds or other nonprofit means to maintain games in museums as we do with other forms of art, work as an answer? (I know game museums already exist and that greedycorps would have a major problem with non profit)

@RobinPoedev @Zennistrad @StillBRS Well yeah multiplayer games cost money to maintain, that's the reason they shut down when they stop making money. I don't think you are adding anything to the topic, unless you think most gamers think that servers run on faerie dust, which is fair ig

@Zennistrad @StillBRS The reason multiplayer game shut down isn't because it stops making money. It's because it costs money to maintain. The same is true of the renaissance painting. It needs to be kept in a climate controlled environment and maintained by experts. If they weren't there it'd die to

@RobinPoedev @mkisstillok3 @arfa2706 Skyrim is doing a good job of incentivizing the player to explore, the problem is that its just an illusion as there is very little interesting stuff to find in the game. Unless you don't need good writing/plot to back it up, then I guess you are fine. Have you played Enderal tho

@HeroHooves @AntifaCostanza I'm not treating anything as anything. I'm telling you what a "gameplay loop" is when industry professionals use the word and why every game has a loop. The gameplay loop is the engine that drives the game towards progression. What would you consider the gameplay loop of mgs?

Controversial #gamedev take, but I hate modern game design and the "gameplay loop" mentality. Too many developers nowadays focus on a gameplay loop like it's a mathematical formula for fun instead of just making something interesting and creative. Everything's repetitive now.

@makro_art @AntifaCostanza I just think you are treating the concepts of progression and gameplay loop way too loosey goosey like they are a similar thing. I agree with a lot of what you are saying here but MGS is truly the peak of original game design and the loop you described doesn't really fit the game

@HeroHooves @AntifaCostanza That be as it may, when designers talk about the "gameplay loop", this is what they are referring to. It's the abstract concepts that produce "progress" that makes it a game as opposed to a sandbox. The "movie game" loop is very common.

@AntifaCostanza There's a lot of confusion here regarding what a gameplay loop is. Gameplay elements are not loops. The mgs loop is actually >Sneak/Fight your way to a location >At that location, reveal more of the story >Story tells you the next location to go to.

@JonasTyroller @ThatRobotnikGuy Often what's fun in a game is the discontinuity of gameplay (I'm actually trying to write a paper on that), fresh mechanics is one thing, but you can always just flip a game on it's head! There is no law that says, you can't do that.

@ThatRobotnikGuy Do you mean the "now you play the same thing again but with one additional upgrade" kinda loops or what do you mean exactly?
