Got asked an interesting question today by a good friend of mine who is a skeptic: “If the greatest proof of love is Christ’s altruistic death on the cross, is it really altruistic if he knew he’d be resurrected? Wouldn’t that knowledge be his motivation?” No one thinks like this in everyday life. When the firefighter runs into your burning building and saves you, you don’t say “well, you wore protective gear and knew you’d survive.” When someone clears your crushing student debt, you don’t say “you won’t go broke, so who cares.” We intuitively understand that sacrifice is measured by what was risked and given relative to the NEED, not by whether the giver had resources beyond what they spent. I’d even argue the greatest proof of Christ’s love isn’t the cross as an isolated event, it’s the consequence: adoption and eternal life. Something so immense we don’t deserve. If that consequence is fixed, even if you cynically undermine the process, who cares? Imagine a teacher says the price for coming late to class is three strokes. You come late. He says “I’ll take them for you,” gives himself three mild ceremonial taps, lets you go, then says “you’re now my son.” Would you care how hard he hit himself? But even granting all that, that’s not what happened. The punishment was real. The process was brutal. Christ suffered, and Gethsemane proves it, he sweats blood, he begs for the cup to be taken away. The cost was everything. The gift is beyond measure. So the question fails on every level: First, the standard itself is absurd, we don’t apply it to human sacrifice, why apply it to divine? Second, the framing is backwards, the proof isn’t the process but the consequence, and the consequence is so extravagant it defies comprehension. And lastly, the premise is wrong, the cost was real, the suffering genuine, the dread palpable. What remains is exactly what Christians have always claimed: love demonstrated not in spite of foreknowledge, but through WILLING embrace of unthinkable cost for undeserving recipients.
