What began as an engagement celebration ended in heartbreak after an Arkansas police officer drowned trying to save his newly engaged fiancée. Officer Fred Marsh, 24, had proposed Saturday morning before the couple headed out for a canoe trip on Missouri's Elk River with friends. When his fiancée was caught in the current while trying to get back to the boat, Marsh and another officer jumped in to rescue her. They got her to safety, but Marsh became exhausted, disappeared beneath the water and was found dead the next day. "He saw the love of his life in distress," her mother said. "He gave his life helping someone else."

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York, the same kind of raid that had humiliated and arrested LGBTQ people for decades. Freedom isn't freedom if it only applies to the people the government happens to approve of. We don't believe your rights come from a government, a politician, or a permission slip. They're yours.
