what’s an example of data that notion is uniquely qualified to store? in a world where all you have to do is say to an agent ‘store this’ and when you want to retrieve it, just ask for it, and the agent can present it to you on demand in any abstraction you can imagine- where does notion fit?

notion as a platform is highly flexible even with structure its meant to be customized notion inevitably will or already has come to this conclusion and probably is creating a version of this as we speak, with the upsell being you wouldn't have to spend time even figuring out how to build things in house if you could build them with the same effort (and higher reliability since it would be completely based on notion)

i am extremely bearish on notion no one i know still uses notion - its much easier to put thoughts into claude and vibecode ideas directly - ive created multiple dashboards of my own to host documents, files and apps - way easier/ better - what usecase does notion have left?

ai is totally different. gpu clusters run flat-out 24/7, so we're out of grid headroom. utilities now have to build massive new power plants to keep up, and because utilities get a guaranteed profit on any new construction they build, regular ratepayers are the ones who are going to eat that bill eventually

@lutherlowe dead on arrival at scotus. georgia v. public resource and veeck are too foundational. you can't satisfy due process with an unsearchable, print-disabled iframe. it's just sdo panic trying to protect their premium pdf racket.

No joke, Congress is actively considering (and has nearly passed) a law which would make projects like this illegal by subjecting certain parts of law to *copyright*. Call your member of Congress and ask them to vote AGAINST the PRO CODES Act.
Joe Barrow@barrowjoseph

New paper: every law in America is technically public. But not really, until now! With @DenisPeskoff at UC Berkeley, we built a corpus of ~every publicly accessibly city and county law, and released a huge chunk of it! 2.2 million laws, you're (probably) covered in it! 🧵

@appsicle_ @GRITCULT the question is how long until the non-technical majority learn how insanely easy it is to talk to your data. once it clicks, and it clicks fast imo, interfaces like @NotionHQ become so insufferably contrived. I’d bet on the the non-technical adoption happening sooner than later.

@GRITCULT sure u can if your willing to put the effort which is why some ppl stay with notion, they don't feel like they wanna but extra effort into setting up the system to then work on the knowledge base

it’s wild that there’s not already a single canonical source for this. policy at all levels ought to be aggregated clearly with changes tracked in real time. this is a clearly defined project with outsized benefits. the technology exists and the public owns this data. let’s work on this.

@HeySilasReed @barrowjoseph @DenisPeskoff @chiefofscouts The underlying text is public and can be hosted, but it's more challenging to collect and parse PDFs (which nobody continually maintains AFAIK) vs use the structure aggregators (i.e. municode) provide. We're working on the FOIA route, but its costly too.

@mycelias what about a world where constituent sentiment is aggregated around policy ideas such that legislators at all levels of government have instant access to clear, concise, and accurate reflections on the will of the people they serve

it seems like legal / municipal ordinance AI is coming in a very big way. we're going to build the Whole Government Surveillance Machine, and let citizens peer into every interactions of every decision that governs their lives. you can't vote for something you don't understand

to @barrowjoseph’s original point, the actual text of municipal code is completely public... and could be assembled the ‘hard way’ with automated FOIA requests, I think? are there any aggregators pulling together an up to date canonical dataset that covers all the data your team has been analyzing, @DMilo75?

@HeySilasReed @barrowjoseph @DenisPeskoff @chiefofscouts The aggregators themselves provide this in a sense, and it’s not clear if it’s legal to rehost their data. We’re working towards this though, and for historical codes which we’ve collected. Though, as academics we’re also incentivized to analyze the data extensively first.

@HeySilasReed @DenisPeskoff @chiefofscouts Very cool, happy to chat. Though from what I understand municode only covers a fraction of municipalities — benefit of our approach is coverage, though you do lose the “easy weekly diff”

A restaurant table belongs to the restaurant, not an app. Today we're releasing Channel Connect by SevenRooms under an open license. Real-time sync across reservation platforms. More tables for diners. One book for restaurants.
