Romero: It’s Really Two Separate Markets In my view, the conversation around Cristian Romero’s valuation only makes sense if you separate it into two very different markets. The first is the Premier League market. This is where clubs are operating with enormous broadcasting revenue and financial firepower. Recent deals involving defenders such as Van Hecke and Lacroix show the level of spending English clubs are prepared to commit. If Tottenham were selling Romero to another Premier League side, that is the benchmark for his valuation. The second is the European market. At this stage, these are the only clubs to have shown genuine, concrete interest in Romero and held meaningful discussions with his representatives. The problem is they simply don’t have the same financial resources as Premier League clubs. Without the television income and spending power available in England, they’re unlikely to meet Tottenham’s valuation and will inevitably try to negotiate a significantly lower fee. That leaves Spurs with a straightforward but difficult decision. If there is no Premier League interest, do they accept a lower European offer that still covers the remaining value of Romero’s contract and any outstanding payments owed to Atalanta? Or do they reject those bids, keep the player for another six to twelve months, and work towards reintegrating him into the squad? The reality is that wanting to sell a player and being able to sell him at your asking price are two very different things. Tottenham can value Romero at Premier League levels, but if the only active market is in Europe, they may ultimately have to decide whether maximising value today is more important than keeping an elite defender and reassessing the situation later. Meaning reintegrating a player into a squad who has actively spoken in opposition against the board in public and has a lot of reported influence behind the scenes who could create more squad issues going forward #COYS 🤍
