If your average VC were either (A) completely incompetent, but meant well and believed in the purpose of universities, or (B) completely corrupt but very clever at navigating economic and political realities, UK HE would probably still be doing ok.

Perhaps the UK had a disproportionate number of academics relative to its population, but that was sustainable because it was until recently a global leader in research and education. So yes, the inwardly focused England of the future likely has much less need for such things.

@drvukovich Yes, that was back when UUK was still known as the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, and they were very much underpaid for their global talents. Fortunately that injustice has been partly rectified.

@HigherEd_UK Home students shouldn’t be fleeced either. Education is a public good. This used to be a widely-accepted principle.

Yes...why *did* corrupt and incompetent Vice Chancellors borrow vast sums of money for capital expenditures on the expectation of infinite international student recruitment and ignore all warnings at the time? Oh right, that surprise home tuition fee cap left them no choice!
Alex Vukovich@drvukovich

The question should be: why is fleecing foreign students the funding model for UK universities? Surely there are better ways to fund HE, e.g. through taxes 🤔

It really snuck up on them 10 years after their personal club lobbied for the policy.

The public should be allowed to be ignorant of research without causing research infrastructure to be demolished Yes, universities failed miserably, but not because universities are too quiet about their achievements, but because they are now too well known for the wrong things
Tony Thorne@tonythorne007

@HigherEd_UK Public ignorance is not wilful. It’s because universities have failed to translate and transfer understanding of specialist research for a non-specialist audience.

And how is Vivienne funded? How much do @UniversitiesUK pay be be members of the "club". Is is good "value for money"? Does it make them a profit?
21group@21percentgroup

An organisation run by Vice Chancellors polls VCs on cutting student support Why not ask if they’ll take pay cuts or forgo bonuses? Vivienne Stern of @UniversitiesUK calls for a “serious conversation on how VCs are funded" Sorry, "degrees are funded" theguardian.com/education/2026…

As it is for @EdinburghUni so it is for all @UniversitiesUK members. Remember folks, VCs get top $$ because they are outstanding managers and in such great demand. Between them they have managed to destroy the sector and their staff collectively demand their replacement. @ucu

Industrial action at even rich universities like Edinburgh & Cambridge shows extent of problems besetting UK Higher Education At both universities, vice chancellors have made questionable decisions There's little indication that they recognise the value of building consensus
