Historically, bankrupting a university is a good way to get a VC job at another university, and buildings are a good way to create a triumphantly massive debt. Probably this game is over, but this is a class of one-trick ponies.
Kingston Dissenter1@KUdissenter

Why are so many UK VCs seemingly obsessed with spending £millions on giant vanity projects? Kingston currently has a VC that wants to have a giant new 'legacy' building. No wonder HE is in dire straits.😡

"Universities have ‘lost legitimacy’ with the public” This is because of Vice Chancellors & their cronies who have behaved like hedge fund managers — leveraging debt, chasing vanity projects & awarding themselves bumper pay rises hepi.ac.uk/reports/prepar…

That centuries-old prestige well is almost dry, with no plan whatsoever for replenishment.
Queen Mary UCU@qm_ucu

@HigherEd_UK The Cookie Cutter University which NOUS is imposing upon everyone simply cannot attract anyone. They're just making 17-year-olds pick their future on the basis of the prestige of a couple of centuries-old places, rather than the content of their studies & research.

No one is quite sure what the Student Experience™ is—least of all students—only that academics are not essential to its delivery and often seem to be getting in the way of it...
Queen Mary UCU@qm_ucu

@HigherEd_UK Though unclear what that Student Experience™ will be, as they've intimidated people out of talking with students about this and haven't properly consulted the students' union. Our students consistently celebrate the wide range of choices & come for the cool modules.

UK HE has focused on recruitment and retention because universities were told they must rely on tuition fees and that those fees were capped. They were never interested in 'widening participation' for any other reason.

The extreme public dissatisfaction comes from Britain sitting at the crossroads between these largely incompatible visions, with young people waiting on comfortable elites and 'boomer' voters to decide their fate.

An isolated economy is primarily about selling the concrete labour you can provide today, not your capacity. Universities will have no advantage there for most people and will revert to grooming niche 'leadership' roles.

The 'graduate jobs' idea presupposed a global Britain—a hub for international leadership in growth industries. Politicians exploiting immigration hysteria killed that, so the UK is starting over with appeals to traditional working-class ideals with no real plan to get there.

But I guess this is really only a concern for the unis whose managers have not bankrupted them by this point.

Actually, it'll be even worse than 'US-style,' because it will specifically be like a state run by MAGA Republicans, with no offsetting diversity of outcomes in 'blue states' or private universities. Just a swift, devastating, ideologically-driven dismantling of the sector.
Research Fortnight@ResFortnight

Universities urged not to ‘drag feet’ on engaging with populists Institutions must engage now or risk US-style crackdown on academic freedom and research, say @dianajbeech and Edward Venning in latest @HEPI_news paper researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-pol…
