Xu Xiangyu perhaps scored his first win of his career against Magnus Carlsen today - undoubtedly a moment he will cherish forever. Had the pleasure of interviewing him in Goa last year - he speaks excellent English! youtu.be/E4Zebj_y2Gc?si…

@mahajanrohan99 Even Bu Xiangzhi maybe has a plus score - dunno if they played each other after that 2017 WC playoffs.

What does the FIDE World Teams Rapid title mean for a player like Ju Wenjun - someone who is the reigning Women's World Champion! We get to know in this interview with her in Hong Kong!

@mahajanrohan99 Yeah this Armageddon game! Anand was actually winning the classical game as well, but failed to convert.

@mahajanrohan99 The only place where it was realistically possible to reach 3000 Rating is in Blitz - I guess Magnus was pretty close with 2986 at some point. But now it seems almost impossible for anyone - just like 2900 seems impossible in classical.

@davidllada What's your perspective on the 15-minute time delays, David? It certainly ruins the viewer and media experience a little, but has been accepted as the norm in all top events - I assume for good reason.

There has been a long controversy in recent years between chess arbiters and fair play officers. Fair play has become a field of its own, with a dedicated FIDE commission, seminars, dedicated training, et cetera. Fair play officers claim that their role requires specific technical knowledge and an IT background that arbiters don't necessarily have. Chess arbiters, on the other hand, are firm in their position that ensuring fair play has always been a core task within their role, and that having dedicated fair play officers as a separate role unnecessarily increases the staff (and costs) required to run an event. Both have solid points. This has caused many heated fights within FIDE. I don't think the solution should be too difficult. Rather than having two different roles, I think chess arbiters could opt to get a "fair play certification" via training. This certification system is very common in many fields — for instance, aviation: you get your commercial pilot licence (CPL), but then you need to pursue additional certifications to fly specific aircraft. I might be missing something, as this is definitely not my territory. But as I said, similar problems have been solved in other fields in a much simpler way. FIDE likes to create redundant structures, so it can distribute chairs, titles, positions, etc. that serve as rewards. But by doing so, it has created a system here that has caused too many bitter arguments between very competent people, which is sad to see. (The picture, taken yesterday at the African Championships that I am covering these days, is for illustrative purposes only)

🇳🇴 Magnus Carlsen’s losing streak continues. 🇨🇳 Xiangyu hands him his first loss at Day 1 of FIDE World Blitz Team Championships. GM Xu Xiangyu (26, China) earned his title in 2017, serves as longtime second to Wei Yi, and captains the Chinese national team. Current blitz rating of 2543, he’s a cornerstone of China’s chess dominance!

@gutsy_gambit If not for vincent, not sure who will be the final participant. Maybe Wei Yi - likely someone who isn't part of GCT this year. Perhaps Jorden makes a comeback.
