A stunning colourised film from the turn of the 20th century showing pupils and teachers at a school in England in 1901. Notice the boy with glasses, a really rare sight for working class children in the Edwardian era.

Ronaldo Said Something About His Son That I believe Every Academy Should Be Paying Attention To Cristiano Ronaldo recently suggested his son may not have what it takes to reach elite levels. Not because of talent or skill but because he grew up in privilege rather than adversity. If Ronaldo, arguably the most driven player of his generation, cannot instill that hunger in his own household, what does that tell us about environmental factors versus innate drive? This raises critical questions for football academies: -Does material comfort genuinely diminish competitive drive? -Can intrinsic motivation replace the extrinsic pressure of necessity? -Should elite academies be developing specialized programming for players from privileged backgrounds, or does this suggest certain psychological traits simply cannot be manufactured regardless of resources invested? The traditional academy model assumes hunger is universal. Ronaldo's observation challenges that assumption entirely. And if clubs ignore it, they're leaving a blind spot in their talent development strategies. The implications extend beyond one family. They challenge how we conceptualize elite development entirely. This is something we all, especially talent developers, should ponder on. What do YOU think? Should academies around the world artificially create hard situations for their players to keep them hungry? If yes, how do we balance that with the global best practices relating to the FIFA Safeguarding policy? If no, how then do we get and keep young players motivated?

To everyone who is returning to a new half term in school tomorrow: Remember, it's a privilege to work with children. Remember, there should be joy in teaching and learning. There's always lots of noise in education but don't let the noise stifle the joy or dim the light.

The longer I've worked in education, the more apparent it's become: simple, consistent routines, applied with love, regular recognition & praise for getting it right &, when necessary, predictable consequences for not following the rules, has the greatest positive impact overall.
