Earlier today, I handed over a letter from the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan to the President of the United Nations General Assembly. The letter highlights the grave implications of India’s illegal suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) for regional peace and security, as well as its serious humanitarian consequences. It urges the Security Council to call upon India to fully restore the implementation of the IWT in all respects, in line with its international obligations. I also drew the attention of the President of the Council to the baseless propaganda campaign launched by India against Pakistan at a time when Pakistan is engaged in mediation efforts in the interest of international peace and security. I further pointed out that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, a longstanding item on the Council’s agenda, remains at the heart of persistent instability in South Asia, underscoring that lasting peace in the region cannot be achieved without its resolution in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
