After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. This isn’t a “bad joke.” It’s the same dehumanizing imagery that has been used for centuries to justify slavery, lynching, segregation, and police violence against Black people. It sends a clear message that even when Black people reach the highest levels of achievement and service, some will still try to drag us back into the mud and deny our humanity. When that message comes from the sitting president, amplified to millions, it’s not just offensive, it’s dangerous. What makes this moment so chilling is how casual it is. A one‑minute conspiracy video about voting machines, and tucked inside is a split-second shot of Barack and Michelle Obama as dancing apes, watermarked by a pro‑Trump account and reposted from the president’s official platform. No apology, no acknowledgement, just another piece of content fed into the outrage machine while Black people are expected to swallow the hurt and move on. We also need to be honest: this is not an isolated slip-up, it’s part of a pattern. Trump has repeatedly targeted Black public figures and has shared racist and conspiratorial content before, and each time, the bar sinks lower and the threats against Black leaders rise. When racist imagery is normalized at the very top, it gives permission for everyone beneath him to escalate , from online harassment to policy decisions that treat Black communities as less than fully human. If you’re exhausted, angry, or numb seeing this, you’re not overreacting , your spirit is telling you the truth. This is what open, state‑sanctioned racism looks like in 2026: AI tools, meme accounts, and a president who feels comfortable circulating a video that calls the first Black First Family monkeys, knowing that some people will laugh and others will look away. We don’t have the luxury of looking away. We have to name it, reject it, and organize against it, because our dignity, our safety, and our future in this country are on the line.
