The WTA introduces sex testing to make sure males aren't competing in the women's category. The response from activists? "This is racist because it will disproportionately affect black and brown women." Hang on a second... Why would a test designed to distinguish male from female disproportionately affect black and brown women? Explain the logic. What exactly are you implying about us? Because from where I'm standing, the only racist stereotype in this debate is the suggestion that black and brown women are somehow less recognisably female than white women. As a brown woman, I find that genuinely offensive. You're effectively saying women who look like me are more likely to fail a sex test because... why? Are we like men? No. A sex test doesn't care whether you're black, brown, white or purple. It exists to distinguish between male and female. If your first instinct is that black and brown women will be wrongly identified as male, perhaps it's worth asking yourself where that assumption came from. Maybe stop projecting your own prejudices onto the rest of us and take some time to unpick your own racism.
