Here is a googly - Max Müller held that India's caste system was not primarily religious in nature. Rather he drew it as a mostly social phenomenon akin to European notions of ethnicity, class, & social etiquette. Müller prophetically observed that its religious nature will atrophy while its social relevance would remain & transform. In fact, he was avidly against caste's abolition. Instead, he advocated for total government apathy towards it, a warning that both the British & Republic of India would completely ignore. Müller's perspective would clash with the growing influence of missionaries who wanted to simultaneously leverage & eradicate caste for the purposes of conversion, as they grew increasingly frustrated with the failure of spreading the Gospel in India.
