Today, I officially opened the Leaders’ Retreat for the newly elected NRM MPs and party-leaning Independents at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi. I congratulated them on their victory and the NRM’s strong performance and reminded them that we must address our weaknesses to do even better.
I emphasised that they are now leaders who must deepen their understanding of ideology, philosophy and strategy in order to diagnose society’s problems and prescribe solutions. This generation must end poverty by creating prosperity through production, not begging or corruption. Every adult must earn from producing a good or a service. I look forward to the engagements of the week ahead.

PERFORMANCE OF ECONOMY REPORT FOR JANUARY 2026
According to the report,Economic activity during the month of January 2026 continued to improve characterized by improvements in business conditions, increased consumer demand and employment.
The high frequency indicators of economic activity and business sentiments, that is the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and the Business Tendency Index (BTI) remained above the 50-mark threshold, indicating improvements in economic activity and outlook respectively.
Annual headline inflation slightly increased to 3.2 percent in January 2026 from 3.1 percent in December 2025, mainly on account of an increase in both core and Energy, Fuel and Utilities (EFU) inflation.
In January 2026, the Ugandan Shilling appreciated by 0.4 percent against the US Dollar, trading at an average mid-rate of Shs. 3,562.14/USD from Shs. 3,575.23/USD in December 2025. This performance was largely driven by the global weakening of the US Dollar, coupled with increased foreign inflows from exports and portfolio investors.
The Central Bank Rate (CBR) remained unchanged at 9.75 percent in January 2026, marking the sixteenth consecutive month at this level. This rate was considered appropriate to support economic activity, while ensuring that inflation stabilizes at the policy target rate of 5 percent over the medium to long-term.
On a year-on-year basis, merchandise trade deficit narrowed by 24.0 percent to USD 206.42 million in December 2025 from USD 271.65 million in December 2024. This decline was due to a robust growth in export receipts, primarily driven by higher earnings from mineral products and coffee exports.
Merchandise export receipts rose substantially by 83.5 percent from USD 760.31 million in December 2024 to USD 1,395.07 million in December 2025 due to increased earnings from coffee, mineral products and cocoa beans, among others.

Maama Janet and I joined Christians in Wii-Gweng, Mucwini (Kitgum) to mark 49 years since the martyrdom of Janani Luwum.
Idi Amin’s mistake was ruling by force and killings. Leadership must be through persuasion and good works, not intimidation.
The NRM has always believed in persuasion through action. Even when support in Northern Uganda was low, we extended electricity, built and upgraded health centres, and improved the road network. In the end, our people said: “NRM maber.” Apwoyo for the overwhelming support in the just concluded election.
We shall build a befitting memorial for Janani Luwum and decisively address cattle rustling in East Acholi.
Apwoyo Northern Uganda.

NRM ECONOMIC REFORMS AND GAINS TO PROTECT:
The PSST Dr. @rggoobi has said Uganda’s economy has all the key ingredients to create wealth and prosperity for all Ugandans, adding that the several economic reforms implemented by the NRM Gov't over the years have laid a firm foundation for a transformative, resilient and fast-growing economy.
“The NRM Government will continue to take deliberate actions to achieve faster socio-economic transformation and to strengthen her position in the global economy,” said the PSST.
He made the remarks today on behalf of Finance Minister @MatiaK5 at the NRM Party Secretariat at Kyadondo Road in Kampala, where he was invited to update the country on the reforms, progress and future direction of Uganda’s economy under the NRM Government.
Flanked by the NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja,Dr.Ggoobi said the economic reforms that have provided the building block of the Ugandan economy today include; Elimination of price controls, liberalisation of the economy, liberalisation of the foreign exchange market, liberalisation of the current account and the capital account as well as export diversification, privatization and rationalization of state enterprises among others.
Dr. Ggoobi also highlighted good macroeconomic management to control inflation, creation of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in 1991 and investment in infrastructure development.
He said the NRM Government actions have created a stable, robust and resilient economy, adding that the size of the economy is projected to expand 17 times since 1986. By June 2026,Uganda's economy is expected to be USD 68.4 billion.
The PSST said Uganda has satisfied all requirements and is currently undergoing assessment by the United Nations for graduation to middle income status. He noted that Uganda's Per-capita GNP stood at USD 1,278 in FY 2024/25 from a low of about USD $570, 10-years ago.
“This is compared to the current benchmark of USD 1,136 for a country to be classified in the lower-middle income category. Our projections indicate that our per-capita income will rise to USD 1,324 by end of FY 2025/26,” said Dr. Ggoobi.
He also said Ugandans are wealthier, adding that poverty has declined from 21.4% in 2016 to 16.1% in 2025, while the proportion of households engaged in the subsistence economy fell from 68.9% in 2010 to 33.1% by FY2023/24.
The PSST said Government is committed to expanding the size of the economy to USD 500 billion by 2040 and to create jobs by focusing resources on the four anchor sectors (ATMS) and their enablers.
“The NRM Government remains resolute to transform Uganda into a modern, inclusive, and competitive economy that works for all,” he said.

Today, together with the NRM leadership, I returned to Lango Sub-region where I held my first rally in Kole District. I explained that my earlier absence here was due to Cabinet engagements to shift cattle restocking to a PDM-based approach, which has now been agreed upon and funded.
I reminded the people of Lango that they are sitting on a goldmine and should therefore embrace proper use of wetlands through fish farming and irrigation to create wealth. I also received the district Chairperson’s memorandum and reaffirmed my commitment to address the pledges, while calling on the people to support the NRM to preserve and build on our achievements.
Apwoyo Tic.

The United States is really powerful.
All these western politicians, NGO talking heads, activists etc who were bleating about Ukraine, Russian bullying etc are mute on Venezuela.
Did they run out of budget to fly activists to Caracas to give us a blow by blow account of the impending chaos in the face of Iraq/Libya part II?
Have they suddenly forgotten about the UN charter and all those lengthy human rights and sovereignty lectures?
OR are they scared of visa bans and lost livelihoods as the US halts their funding?
He who pays the #OutrageMerchant indeed calls the tune!
