1. On a cloudy day this past November, I drove past our neighborhood mass shooter’s house for the hundredth time. The two story grey brick house on McDaniels Ave in Highland Park, IL was right on my way to the grocery store, so I had no choice but to pass it every few days.

4. We got off the plane. I debated whether to tell her. It’s not my business. And there could be a number of innocent explanations for the man’s messaging. But when I saw them stop to use the bathroom, I wrote a quick note.

3. A woman who I am pretty sure was his wife was sitting next to him. She could not see his screen. As we waited to get off the plane, I made small talk with them. The woman said “we are from Chicago but we live in Maine now.” The man wore a wedding ring.

2. The app he was using (looked like WhatsApp) was auto translating Regina’s messages into English from Russian. Every time the man sent a message or put a heart on one, he quickly closed the app and went back to scrolling the news.

1. A story: I was just deplaning at OHare after a flight from Portland ME. The guy right in front of me was having an intimate conversation on his phone with a Russian speaking woman named Regina.
