If you can’t celebrate an Olympic accomplishment for and by the USA 🇺🇸, you are on the wrong side. Period. We truly reached the theater of the absurd when it became “news” last week that hockey players are proud of their country.

This is the hardest and most heartbreaking thing I have ever had to write. Trey Helten was my friend and a friend to so many people. He touched so many people in so many ways. He left a legacy of kindness and selfessness that was an inspiration to all. Through his example… we won’t forget to forget the politics and remember the people. I will miss you Trey. vancouversun.com/news/obituary-…

In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%. While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired. Let's learn more. 🧵1/10

I had an experience this morning that has left me disheartened. This story is true and not embellished. Early this morning, I pulled in to McDonalds, desperate for something resembling coffee. I saw a man, clearly in medical distress, on the ground in the parking lot (and beside a wheelchair). Beside him was a woman, with a jacket over her pajamas, walking back and forth on the phone. I stopped to see if I could help – she was on the phone with 911 and she was speaking kindly and comfortingly to this man. As I stopped, another man stopped also came over. Here is the kicker. This lady lived across the street and had seen him out her window. She bundled up and came down to see if he was okay. He was not. With a combination of anger and distress, she told me that not a single person had acknowledged her or the man. This man was in the parking lot within 15 feet of the drive-thru lane at McDonalds. Multiple people simply sat in their cars while they waited for their English Muffins – no help was rendered – not even a call to emergency services. The employees in the drive thru window could also clearly see this man in distress, and yet no call. I know from the woman that no call had been made as she was currently on the first 911 call recieved. The North Shore of Vancouver is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Canada. There sat the occupants of a Tesla and 2 BMW SVUs. He was cold and shaking and unable to speak clearly. It looked like he may have fallen from his chair and hit his head on the curb. Had the man being wearing a suit, I wonder if the reaction would have been different. Perhaps if the kind and caring woman had not been in her pajamas. The other man and I left when emergency services arrived, yet the woman said she would stay with him. She is my hero. She did what many others should have done. What is happening to us that anyone could drive by another human being in distress? This is worse than driving by. These people were stopped, waiting for their food; impossible not to have seen. Let’s do better people. I hope this man is okay.

There is 3x more Covid circulating than there was at this time in 2021, & much higher Covid transmission than this time in 2022. The pandemic has been “over” for 3 years. Most of the almost 4M weekly cases won’t be reported on paper. When Covid complications ultimately disable/kill you, society will say, “What Covid? Sounds like a YOU problem.”

I’m going to share a cautionary story of what happens when you don’t take the ongoing pandemic seriously. Come trot with me on the journey of a high profile, anti masker who has long C. In early ‘22 this person was transparent about having memory loss issues after having C19.

I’m livid. They’re trying again to push through a mask ban. Not just discouraging masks, but outright banning them. It’s beyond reckless. It’s dangerous, it’s authoritarian, and it’s completely unhinged. Let’s be clear: SARS-CoV-2 is airborne, just like influenza and other pathogens. This isn’t up for debate. High-filtration masks work. They protect the wearer and those around them. A ban doesn’t just increase transmission—it actively forces people into higher-risk situations, including older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and anyone trying to avoid the very real consequences of repeated infections. And here’s the part that really enrages me: The same people who scream about “personal choice” when it comes to not masking are now demanding that no one be allowed to wear one. Where’s the personal choice in that? If masks don’t work, why do they care? And if they do work (spoiler: they do), why are they trying to take away people’s ability to protect themselves? This is authoritarian overreach disguised as “freedom.” It’s also blatant discrimination. People with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or anyone recovering from an infection need masks to safely navigate public spaces. Banning them effectively locks these people out of society. That’s not just unethical—it’s a violation of basic human rights and likely violates the ADA. And let’s talk about the sheer lunacy of this. It’s the public health equivalent of banning seatbelts because some people don’t like wearing them. It ignores decades of research on airborne disease transmission. And for what? Who benefits from forcing people to get sick? Who stands to gain from suppressing a simple, effective intervention? This isn’t about “returning to normal.” Normal was a lie. This is about control. It’s about catering to a vocal, anti-science minority while corporate interests profit off mass infection. History will judge this moment harshly. Future generations will look back and wonder how we let things get this bad. If you’re in Maryland, fight this with everything you’ve got. If you’re anywhere else, don’t think this couldn’t happen where you live. We’ve seen what happens when bad policies spread. This cannot be allowed to stand.

⚠ New mask ban being attempted in Maryland. ⚠ Democratic members of the Maryland General Assembly are sponsoring a new mask ban this Tuesday 2/18 at 1pm. Similar to Nassau, NY this ban puts the burden of proof on the mask wearer to demonstrate medical need. Links in thread:

I’m beyond fatigued with government failures + weak politicians/bureaucrats who worry more about their own interests than the people they serve. Allowing someone to starve to death in govt care is sickening. Halting the building of supportive housing is cruel. #VanPoli #bcpoli
