For those who have been following for #HillsboroughLaw updates, I am very disappointed to say that, unfortunately, there still is not one for us to give. Following the cancellation of the Report Stage hearing on 19th January, we (@NowHillsborough) have not had any meaningful update or meeting with members of the government, despite multiple requests for some form of resolution and/or update. Whilst we are not naive enough to think that the Public Accountability Bill is the only thing on the Prime Ministers desk, we equally find it frustrating that we are being met with such a lack of candour! Even by the dismal standards of modern HE in UK, this kind of behaviour is indefensible. The same was threatened at Leicester in November, but management backed down. Solidarity to Sheffield colleagues. Where is the HE Minister on this? Silent I presume?

As of Monday 19 Jan, the @sheffielduni has stopped paying staff for the foreseeable future. Why? Because staff who took strike action in Dec have refused to reschedule teaching lost during their strike. The university has already docked pay, but is now demanding it is rescheduled in order for staff to be paid at all. It is a constant shock how low management in UK universities will stoop. And all because Sheffield university refuses to rule out compulsory redundancies that their own figures show are completely financially unnecessary. The university are acting totally recklessly, damaging students, staff, and their own reputation. Why are FE lecturers on strike? As Ian Dale pointed out on @LBC, FE lecturers’ starting pay is barely above minimum wage. Minimum wage ≈ £26,400. FE starting pay in England? Not £30k. That’s why staff are striking across England today.

“Every security and intelligence officer should be required to tell the truth, and the leaders of those organisations must bear full responsibility.” The bereaved families of the Manchester Arena bombing are right. As long as any institution is allowed to evade a full duty of candour, victims of state wrongdoing will be denied the accountability and justice they deserve. We need a comprehensive duty of candour applied to the security services. Without it, the culture of cover-ups that the Government has pledged to end will continue. Next week, as the Hillsborough Law reaches its Report Stage, I will push for amendments to ensure a full duty of candour applies to all state agencies. The Government and the Prime Minister personally promised the Hillsborough families, the Manchester Arena families, and many others the culture change and openness required to end state cover-ups. A Hillsborough Law worthy of its name demands nothing less. They must keep that promise. #JFT97

Absolutely disgraceful from the South Yorkshire Police Federation & keeping with tradition sadly & shamefully. They dare to whine about “trial by media” when it was their own secretary in 1989 who spread the lies that weaponised the media against Liverpool fans and was fundamental to the cover up. And now they have the nerve to demand fairness and balance? Whoever signed this off should consider their position.

Congratulations to Lancaster UCU for this great result. After 5 weeks of strike action at Leicester, we have moved the management in the right direction, but we are not quite there yet. The dispute continues but we take heart from this achievement
