@JNZi_ if i understand it correctly it prevents people from having a very poor avatar on what so ever. or and potentially puts them in the imposter mode so you dont have to load the avatar

Can anyone explain to me why performance-gated instances matter when you can already block avatars by performance in the personal safety settings?

@JNZi_ that avatar could easily be remade with 30% less give or take tris. and that would reduce it even further. And the performance ranking will likely get an update sooner or later

This is a modern Booth avatar. Adding the performance gating system before re-evaluating the performance ranks risks alienating new players or those inexperienced with optimization. Polycount as a standalone metric is a poor performance indicator, this shouldn't be very-poor.

@CatchTheSkies More Poly will only worsen the overall framerate. as its already heavily strained by people's lack of interest in optimizing their avatars. you can see the difference in load times and overall problems a higher poly avatar causes over a lower one.

If they're adding an avatar performance limit setting for instances are they gonna raise the polygon count cap for poor rating? There's no reason for the limit to be as low as 70k with modern hardware.

Basis is a cool new technology used to create high performance VR games with custom avatars and way more. It's open source and pretty amazing already. I'm not ok with providing my personal ID to persona, who has had multiple lawsuits and currently is under a class action lawsuit. Not to mention shady privacy and data policies they have. So where's the option for more privacy conscious people @furality

@Aeon_07_ @furality and those of us who have verified are not less privacy concerned then others. We just know what already exist and we also don't really pay more attention to it then needed. being verified is not magicly gonna make you less secure or have more of your privacy taken away.

@Aeon_07_ @furality no one forces you to verify. it's a choice you make. what Vrchat requries is nothing new. if you go to any clubs. conventions etc real life you are required to provide an ID that can be used to find out if you are of age or not. obviously not all places require age of 18+

@RuqaVR @VRChat there are quite a few problems in Vrc like this. huge fps drops by just having the menu open in general. and other minor and major spikes around the general UI. whoever made it has done a really poor job at creating optimized UI

Turning off wingspan menu will boost your fps in VRChat quite a bit. @VRChat why does the wingspan still keep rendering stuff in the background even when ur not looking a your menu?

@HostileLogOut you're literally optimizing the "in gpu" version of the texture. So, what you get is what you get, there's no decompression/compression step. You're PRE-optimizing FAR beyond what unity can do. DXT is the literal format the gpu uses, so yes, it's real smooth loading.

All this talk about compression add-ons for avatar textures in VRChat... but have you ever used AMD compressonator to make the raw dxt to jam an 8k texture into a medium rated avatar without ANY visual loss? Only takes about a half hour per file w/o avx512 lol... but it works.

@shalefoot @Bass_VR it's something i do like to test my self. for instance getting 60 people with a single 4k texture vs another instance with 60 people with a single 8k texture. and then switch it around so that the other 60 do 4k and the other group do 8k. But it all depends on the Gpu

@shalefoot @Bass_VR it depends. but ideally less textures is always better over more textures. i sadly do not have numbers on when it sort of becomes equal or worse. but generally yes 8k textures do require more then 4k and so on in vram and processing. But that said

@Bass_VR for texture size you do not need 100s of 4k or 8k. it will only bloat your avatar's size and make it well not visible to most. and you can easily get great results with 2k or lower if you know how.

@Bass_VR there was no excuse not to do it before someone made this either. Manually adjusting your texture size requires no technical skill or effort. and also the texture sizes do not really impact your performance as much as to many textures. mostly you should cap out at 8 unigue
