Happy to announce that I've received a grant from @InsideNatGeo to continue working on my project documenting the impact of the Green Revolution in Punjab. I'll be spending a lot of time in the coming months in the region, paying special attention to its groundwater crisis.

“Sir, my daughter is getting married… I have to perform the tika ceremony… if my crop gets sold, my family’s honour will be saved.” The farmer said this in tears at the Guna mandi. But his desperate plea was lost somewhere in the noise and chaos around him. This is the reality of #farmers in the country their pain often goes unheard. Governments seem to listen only when their voices reach Delhi.

Let’s be clear. Tips are not wages. Riders earn ₹25,000–30,000 per month through their work—tips are only an occasional add-on in a country that is not a tipping economy. Riders receive 100% of the tips, with zero deductions, including payment gateway charges. 1/2
Deepinder Goyal@deepigoyal

Tips are over and above the wages (~25-30k per month) that we quote. Having said that, tips are a small part of a rider's overall income. We aren't a good tipping economy. All tips get passed on to our riders as is, without any deductions (even no deductions for payment gateway charges).

Hear! Hear! people, there is a law which says you can’t step out of your house in the night in Hyderabad. You should just stay home, or otherwise the @TelanganaCOPs will send you to jail for no reason. I propose in future they should send drones into every house to check us.

When Sachin and Kambli stitched that 664 run partnership which made them overnight stars a certain Amol Mazumdar waited for 2 days with his pads on for his chance. What he didn't know was that this would go on for 2 decades because even after raking up more than 11 thousand first class runs he never got the chance to don the blue jersey. Now he has headed a team that has won a WC. This is straight up a Bollywood level script ....

The Green Revolution, which introduced hybrid seeds, chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and new technologies in the 1960s, helped Punjabi farmers make massive strides in food production. “We got caught up in the race to increase productivity and ended up damaging ourselves,” Iqbal Singh said. “The chemicals are the cause of all diseases.” Read @Hrsha's photo essay: caravanmagazine.in/agriculture/wh…

Punjab’s groundwater is disappearing fast—dropping nearly 20 inches per year. Wells once dug at 100 feet now reach 500 feet, tapping into aquifers contaminated with uranium, lead, and arsenic. What happens when the water runs out?  🔗: undark.org/2025/02/03/dow…

🧵India extracts more groundwater than any other country—more than the U.S. and China combined. In 2024 alone, it drew nearly 65 trillion gallons from its aquifers. A major driver? Agriculture, especially in Punjab.  🔗: undark.org/2025/02/03/dow…
