🇰🇪🇧🇷On 8th May 2026, as part of her Environmental Awareness Tour in Brazil, Truphena Muthoni, HSC, broke the Guinness World Record for the most trees hugged in one hour. The previous record stood at 1,123 trees. Truphena surpassed it, hugging more than 1,200 trees in one hour at the Jardim Botânico Brasília. The event was attended by H.E. Dr. Andrew Karanja, Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya in Brazil; Amb. Peris Kariuki, Deputy Head of Mission; Mr. Allan Freire, President of Jardim Botânico Brasília; Kenyan nationals living in Brazil; and residents. Both the Ambassador and the President of Jardim Botânico Brasília lauded and congratulated Truphena on her achievement, and acknowledged her previous milestones, a 48-hour and a 72-hour sustained single tree hug, as part of a remarkable ongoing journey of environmental advocacy.

Why hug not plant in Brazil ? One action doesn’t cancel another. One person hugging a tree does not stop a thousand people from planting.💚 This trip was meant to be a vacation. I could have done nothing no planting, no hugging. Instead, I chose to turn it into meaningful engagement with forest movements, and added a symbolic 1hour tree hug as a gift. And your reaction? It matters. It means the message has landed, you care about planting, you care about forests. So let’s do both. Let’s hug. And when the rains are here , let’s plant. Because impact is not always about doing everything yourself,it’s about awakening a generation to act . 🇰🇪 #HugTheEarth

As promised to Kenyans, I chose dialogue and I showed up. I participated in the high-level meeting KFS, represented by Francis Kariuki on behalf of Chief Conservator Alex Lemarkoko, and FKF-CFA, represented by Karanja Njoroge. It was chaired by George K. Tarus, Forest Development Secretary, and included stakeholders Friends of Karura Forest, Greenbelt Movement, and Climate Envoy Mr. Ali Muhammed. On the concerns around Karura Forest, solutions discussed included relocating the NYS barracks outside the forest, allowing NYS to commute, and moving the tree nursery to KFS headquarters where there is adequate space. In my intervention, I proposed scaling tree growing through school-based nurseries, drawing from Truphena’s Legacy Tree Nursery by Manu Chandaria, which has a 100,000 seedling capacity. Doing this in 20 schools would help achieve 2 million seedlings without cutting down trees. This is the power of dialogue. When we engage, we find solutions. Where there is no dialogue, there is conflict and no results. #HandsOffOurForests #HugTheEarth #Save Karura

As a sister to the forest, I listen not only to trees but to rivers too.Water carries the story of the forest.If we lose the forest, we lose the river, and we lose ourselves.
