Last week, I hosted an event in Parliament about violence at the UK-France border. @AsylumMatters, @humansforrights, Project Play, and others shared reports of horrifying state neglect and violence, including towards children. I have tabled a motion calling on the government to establish an inquiry into the UK’s role and to end the criminalisation of people seeking asylum.

The political aim of these violent actions is to stop people reaching the UK: as such, they constitute an outsourcing and externalisation of UK border policy and act in the anti-migrant interests of the UK government.

“You can’t stay but you can’t go” - State violence at the UK France border, emphasises the UK and French governments’ joint responsibility for violence at the UK-France border. Both governments organise and fund violent policing operations in the name of ‘security’.

Much of which is paid for by the British government through bilateral agreements with France. We hope our report provides essential information on the situation and that this conversation gives rise to real action to prevent further fatal and non fatal harm at the border.

State violence is a daily occurrence characterised by incessant use of tear gas, violent police actions on beaches including slashing of boats, widespread evictions, racism and hostility perpetrated by French police.

Yesterday we were in Parliament to launch our new collaborative report, “You can’t stay but you can’t go” - state violence at the UK France border” at an event hosted by @NadiaWhittomeMP.

Imagine experiencing this at the age of just 8 years old. Tear gas deployed on beaches disproportionately impacts children, with developing lung capacity & how a charity supported a new born who’d had tear gas used against them. This is how government spend your Money.
