I posted this from a US Congresswoman earlier, with this response, and someone asked, "why not." Here's why not for anyone who cares: 1. Because American citizenship requires primary allegiance to the United States. When someone naturalizes, the very first line of the Oath of Allegiance requires them to 'absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty.' While Congresswoman Ramirez is a birthright citizen, the fundamental social contract of American citizenship remains the same: your political loyalty is exclusively to the U.S. Constitution, not a foreign government. 2. Because she is an elected Member of the United States Congress. When you take the oath of office, you swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. You cannot effectively legislate, protect American interests, or secure our homeland if your primary loyalty lies with a foreign nation. It is a fundamental conflict of interest. Imagine a corporate board member saying their primary loyalty was to a rival company—they would be fired immediately. 3. Because there is a distinct difference between cultural heritage and political allegiance. America is unique; we are not an ethno-state bound by bloodlines, but a republic bound by shared ideals and the Constitution. You can absolutely celebrate Guatemalan food, faith, music, and history—that is the beauty of the American melting pot. But when it comes to civic duty, national security, and political loyalty, you must be an American first, second, and always. 4. Because national sovereignty depends on a unified citizenry whose first priority is the survival and prosperity of their own nation. If our own leaders view the United States as a secondary priority to a foreign nation, we cannot expect to maintain secure borders, negotiate strong trade deals, or protect American workers. Putting America second is how a nation eventually loses its sovereignty altogether. That's why not. And the fact that people ask "why not" shows how far down the tube this republic has fallen. Useful idiots. Everywhere.

Regardless of what the US Supreme Court ultimately decides on birthright citizenship, this is a great example of something Congress can fix. You can certainly become a US citizen through a legal process and be proud of your Guatemalan heritage. You cannot be a Guatemalan first and US citizen second.

I don’t know what the Supreme Court will decide on the question of birthright citizenship. But I know this, if the courts continue to enforce practices that increase chaos, destruction, and division within the United States, like allowing 1.5 million Chinese nationals to vote because they happened to be born in an American hospital, people will very soon stop respecting the courts. And then things will really get dangerous.

Nice try, Congresswoman, but you surely know there are designated chairs for @POTUS and other visiting dignitaries to use when visiting the Court. This may be the first time a sitting President has listened to oral arguments, but so what? He didn’t even use the designated chair, he sat in with the commoners. And are you implying that the justices can be intimidated by his presence? Separation of powers exists regardless of what you claim as intimidation. He sat, he listened, he left. Dignified and entirely acceptable. Now, if you want to debate the merits of the case, let’s get it on. Otherwise, respectfully sit down.

No sitting president in American history has ever attended oral arguments at the Supreme Court until today when Trump showed up to intimidate the justices. But the Constitution doesn't change depending on who’s in the room. In fact, it’s quite clear: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…”
