Donald Richie on Kon Ichikawa's 'Ten Dark Women' (1961): "Without the feminine/masculine balance of Yukinojo in the Wada script, Ichikawa could not have accomplished the wonderful ambivalence of 'An Actor’s Revenge' (1963). And without the brilliantly straight-faced parodies in 'Ten Dark Women' (1961), the forceful sexual dualities of Wada’s script would have gone unrealized. As it is, the film remains as a perfect point of balance among genres, between attitudes, and amid generalizations. It speaks precisely for its time, and this perhaps accounted for the general miscomprehension. 'Ten Dark Women' (1961) invites us to enjoy the very subject it criticizes, and was therefore disapproved of and neglected, until recently. Tellingly, it was the only one of Ichikawa’s sixties comedies chosen for revival by Daiei. Now thirty years later, we have reached the point where women are much more outspoken about men, where bumping off a philanderer is no closer to actuality, but can at least be contemplated, even relished. The joke (like all jokes) reveals a desire. The picture finally made some money at the box office in its second life, since most of Japan’s disposable income is in the pockets of young, unmarried, working women who, across the intervening decades, apparently feel a kinship with their ten dark sisters" ("Kon Ichikawa", edited by James Quandt, 2001) P.S: On this day, 65 years ago, "Ten Dark Women" (1961) was released in Japan.

China blocked the airspace. Germany said no. The Czech Republic said no. Taiwan's president found another way and landed anyway. President Lai Ching-te just arrived in Eswatini, Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in Africa. His greeting: "Sanibonani," the local Swazi word for hello. Simple, human, and pointed. Two weeks ago, this trip was impossible. The Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar revoked overflight permits for Lai's presidential aircraft less than 24 hours before departure, in what Taiwan described as a coordinated act of pressure at China's behest. It marked the first time in history that a Taiwanese president was forced to cancel an entire foreign trip due to airspace denial. Taiwan then made urgent requests to transit through Europe. Germany refused. The Czech Republic refused. So Taiwan found another route. The details have not been fully disclosed. Lai arrived unannounced, posted a photo from the aircraft stairs, and greeted the Swazi people in their own language. Beijing deployed the airspace of three countries to stop a democratic leader from visiting a democratic ally. It pressured two European nations into refusing transit. It failed. Lai is there. Eswatini has held firm as Taiwan's only African partner despite sustained Chinese diplomatic and economic pressure for years. Taiwan has only 12 diplomatic allies left globally. The CCP has spent decades systematically eliminating each one with promises of investment and political pressure. It has not gotten this one yet. "Taiwan will never be deterred by external pressures," Lai wrote. After what it took to get there, those are not empty words. #Taiwan #CCP #China #Eswatini #Lai #Diplomacy #Geopolitics #Airspace #Freedom #TaiwanStrong

Sanibonani! I arrived in #Eswatini today to affirm our longstanding friendship. #Taiwan will never be deterred by external pressures. Our resolve & commitment are underpinned by the understanding that Taiwan will continue to engage with the world—no matter the challenges faced.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is taking a jab at electric cars, calling them a “big, stupid virtue signal." “I’m not interested in electric cars at all," Seinfeld reportedly said in an interview. "Anybody else wants to do it, that’s fine. I think it’s a big, stupid virtue signal. ‘Look at me. I’m saving the planet, yeah.’ What about the lithium? It’s all BS."

That bag has a name. It's a bindle. And in the 1930s, about 250,000 American teenagers actually packed one and walked out the door to ride freight trains, looking for work after the crash wiped out their families' savings. They were called boxcar boys and girls. Many were just 16 or 17. They left because there was no food at home, or because they didn't want to be another mouth their parents couldn't feed. One boy left home with the 72 cents his mother pulled from her purse, the last of her money. About 4 million Americans were on the road in those years. The cartoon image we know traces back to two artists. Charlie Chaplin's Tramp character, the little guy in baggy pants with a stick, debuted in 1914. He became a global icon. Walt Disney later said Chaplin was one of the inspirations for Mickey Mouse. Then in 1958, Norman Rockwell painted a runaway boy carrying a bindle for the Saturday Evening Post cover. That picture is the one that stuck in our heads. The actual life behind the bag was hard. People who lived it called themselves hobos, and they were strict about the word. A hobo was a worker who traveled. A tramp only worked when he had to. A bum didn't work at all. Hobos hated being mixed up with the other two. They followed the harvests. Strawberries in spring, hops in summer, apples in fall, potatoes in winter. Pay was a few dollars a day, sometimes less. Riding freight trains was illegal and could kill you. Railroad police, who they called bulls, beat them off the cars. You could slip and get crushed between cars. Or freeze to death sleeping in a boxcar in winter. A British poet named W.H. Davies, who wrote a memoir called The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp, lost his foot trying to jump onto a moving train. So they built their own world. Their camps near rail yards were called jungles. They shared a stew called Mulligan, where everyone threw in a potato, or a piece of meat, or whatever they had. They left messages for each other on water tanks: a nickname, a date, and the direction they were heading, so the next person passing through could see who had been there. They had a phrase for someone who died on the road. He caught the Westbound. In 1900, a town in Iowa called Britt, with about 2,000 people, decided to host them. Every August since, hobos and rail riders show up to crown a Hobo King and Queen, with crowns made from coffee cans. The convention is still running. There's a Hobo Memorial Cemetery in Britt for the ones who caught the Westbound. The cartoon turned it into a childhood dream. For a quarter-million American kids in the 1930s, it was just the bag you grabbed before walking out the door.

Christoph Engelhardt, MD☤🇺🇸@ChristophE55272

From what I've read on McCarthy, he was right about 85% of the time regarding those he accused of being communists, or those who had even casual or tenuous relationships with communists. We need a man like him in the Senate badly. The Communist Control Act of 1954 has been neutered in a number of ways, but it's still illegal to be a member of the Communist Party. Congress needs to revisit the Act and reimplement portions of the Act in the interest of American security. We need to use propaganda, if necessary, to suppress the left's infatuation with Marxism and Communism.

I’ve lived in NYC for over 3 decades. I’ve never heard anyone move away because there aren’t enough bike lanes and/or food deliveries. Top complaints in my circles are concerns about personal safety, unaddressed rampant homelessness, lack of rigor in public schools and high taxes
