Of all the many abominations in the Trump administration, I personally find this one to be the most abhorrent. Unlike most of the others, this one actually understands the full extent of the catastrophe he's doing his best to bring about, all in hopes of one day being president.

SECRETARY RUBIO: Why are we in NATO? You have to ask that question. Why do we send trillions of dollars and have all of these American forces stationed in the region, if in our time of need, we won't be allowed to use those bases?

If the USA does not intend to honour the obligation to defend NATO because European countries dont join an offensive war of choice against Iran that we have absolutely no obligation to join, the USA membership of NATO is already worthless. The NATO oath to defend each other is unconditional. If you dont intend to honour it because you are offended about disagreements that have nothing to do with the treaty obligation that you have sworn to uphold, your are not a realiable ally. Tresties with you are worthless and your word means nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case for the USA.

If Trumps war in Iran leads to the end of NATO, it will go down in history of as one of the worst foreign policy decisions in American history ever. I hope Trump administration officials will work hard to avoid this disastrous outcome.

BREAKING 🇵🇱🇭🇺: The office of Polish PM @donaldtusk just released a statement and video regarding Hungarian government informing Russian government abut every EU move. “What we heard today is confirmation of a very disturbing dependence of Viktor Orbán's government on the Moscow authorities. The recordings revealed dependencies, but they also showed how the foreign minister of a member state reports to the Russian minister on the completion of a task and asks for patience. Nothing more repulsive could have been expected, and this is disqualifying.”

Just a reminder that the senator who sponsored the bill which became law with broad bipartisan support that states a president cannot pull the US out of NATO without congressional approval was … Marco Rubio.
Acyn@Acyn

Rubio: If now we've reached a point where the NATO alliance means that we can't use those bases to defend America's interests, then NATO is a one-way street…then why are we NATO? We’re going to have to reexamine that relationship. That’s a decision for the president.

The generation of Europeans who understood Russia is gone. The knowledge gap they left behind is now being filled by disinformation — and the Kremlin is exploiting it. Here's what Europe must do before it's too late: 🧵[1/7]

Rubio is conflating "defending interests and national security" with "conducting wars of choice." NATO is a defense alliance, and the obligations under its treaty are geographically limited under Article 6: --- Article 6 For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack: on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France, on the territory of Turkey or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer; on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer. --- The use of NATO bases by the US is by agreement between the nation hosting the base and the US, not specifically via NATO. The NATO countries that have specifically denied the US the use of bases on their soil for the purpose of attacking Iran are Spain, Turkey, Italy and France. Italy and France have, however, allowed the use of their bases for logistical support. NATO countries can decide individually whether they want to help Trump wage his war of choice. It's not actually a NATO matter. The US withdrawing from NATO would simply make it even harder for the US to access military bases overseas, and restrict its ability to project military power, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. If Rubio truly had US national interests at heart, he would understand that.
Department of State@StateDept

SECRETARY RUBIO: NATO wasn’t just about defending Europe, but allowing us to have military bases in Europe for our national security. If we’ve reached a point where the NATO alliance means that we can’t use those bases to defend our interests, then it’s a one-way street.

This image shows part of Saturn seen through the upper haze of Titan's atmosphere. It's an actual image captured with Cassini's narrow-angle camera on March 31, 2005 from a distance of about 6400 km (to Titan) and adjusted to approximate natural color on Titan.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, reacting to our story on leaked audio showing Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó conspiring to lift EU sanctions on Russia, says he's never heard anything so sad and disgusting as those phone calls.

Telegraph: “Trump is strongly considering pulling out of NATO.” The US president can't simply pull the country out of NATO. A 2023 law requires approval from Congress (or 2/3 of the Senate) to withdraw, a safeguard passed largely due to concerns about Trump’s earlier threats to leave the alliance.

The stakes go beyond Norway. Oslo says Article 5 applies to Svalbard too. It plans $8.5B in military aid to Ukraine, with most of it outside the US-led procurement scheme. Norway’s message: missiles on the Kola peninsula are aimed not at Oslo, but America’s east coast. 6X

Norway is also hedging against US dependence. Its forces still run on American systems, but Oslo is buying submarines from Germany, frigates from the UK and long-range missiles from South Korea. Under Build with Ukraine, officials say drone production in Norway may follow. 5/

Across 120 miles from Finnmark sits Russia’s Kola peninsula — one of Europe’s most militarised zones and home to the northern fleet. Norway’s waters are an early-warning corridor for tracking Russian submarines into the Atlantic. 3/

Russia’s war showed how hard it is for large forces to move under drone-heavy skies, and Trump cast doubt on automatic US reinforcement. Cold Response 26 brought 32,000 troops from 14 allies into this new Arctic posture. 2/

NATO is rewriting Arctic defense around one lesson from Ukraine. Under drone-saturated skies, lost ground is hard to retake — Times. Norway says it is moving from a withdrawal model to a not-an-inch policy in Finnmark — defend from the first centimetre, not return later. 1/
