At 34, he’s being left brutally exposed by a system that offers him little protection. Under Arne Slot, Liverpool play an aggressive high line, but without the right midfield shield, Van Dijk is constantly asked to defend huge spaces, recover in transition, and clean up structural issues around him. That’s not sustainable for any centre-back, let alone one in the latter stage of his career. This isn’t Van Dijk declining, it’s Van Dijk being overexposed. Defenders look vulnerable when isolated repeatedly. The issue isn’t his quality, it’s the lack of balance and protection around him. Liverpool are still relying on him as the foundation of the defence while failing to build the right support system in front of him. Van Dijk doesn’t need criticism, he needs structure. Right now, he’s being asked to cover problems that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
