NEW: Tanner Horner, who pleaded guilty to murdering 7-year-old Athena Strand, seen on camera reacting to a woman telling him that a "seven-year-old kid" had been kidnapped. During the trial today, jurors broke down in tears after audio footage was played of Horner killing Athena after he told her to take off her shirt and said she was "really pretty." Athena repeatedly asked for her mother. "Horner is then heard asking Athena to remove her shirt, and there are several moments when she says "no" and asks for her mom. That was followed by repeated sounds of crying, screaming and banging," NBC reported. Jurors were also shown footage (below) of Horner being stopped while trying to deliver packages. He was told by a woman that the road was blocked off because a "seven-year-old kid" had been kidnapped. "Are you serious?" Horner said. Give this man the death penalty.

Noemi Guzman was found criminally insane after an assault on her father in 2024. She was being treated for schizophrenia. Quick thread on court docs from that case & the insanity finding...

@JakeMaaske @TeamPillen How is this on the judges? The county attorney and defense attorney often agree when someone is insane and the judge has now other choice. The Lincoln Regional Center decides how they are treated after the finding.

It is imperative that Nebraska must be more critical toward judges when it comes to the insanity plea. If they are too insane to stand trial, they are too insane to interact with society. Nebraska mustn’t commit the same evils as other states like North Carolina, Georgia, and Washington. In fact, we should follow Idaho, Kansas, Montana, and Utah, and completely rid of the insanity defense. Why? Because mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent.

Thank God for the heroism of the Omaha Police Officers who saved this three-year-old’s life. Because of their decisive action, an innocent child will live, and for that we are grateful. The information emerging about the child’s attacker is disturbing. Her prior acts of violence—including trying to set her father on fire and breaking into a pastor’s home with a knife and trashing it while he barricaded himself in a bedroom, for which she was found not responsible due to insanity—raise grave questions as to why she was free and on the street. I have ordered my team to thoroughly review this case and identify weaknesses it reveals in our criminal justice and mental health commitment and detention systems. This perpetrator was clearly dangerous and known to be so; she should not have been free to harm others. If the Legislature’s decades of shrinking our regional center infrastructure and failing to strengthen our civil commitment laws made this attack possible, then we need to fix it. Now.
