Congrats to EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO) for these important projects! The deployment of three EVLOFLEX battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Commonwealth of Virginia will support the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA). Set to be commissioned in 2025 and 2026, the projects will contribute to the transformation of the electric grid to 100% clean energy by 2050 and boost investment into clean energy technologies in the fight against climate change.

@EnergyEvlo, a fully integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) provider and subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, announced that its first utility-scale BESS project in the United States, is now operational. The contracted 3 MW/12 MWh installation is located in Troy, Vermont. The system will help increase the amount of clean energy generation available to the New England grid and reduce peak demand by storing energy during strong production times for later use during peak energy demand. The Troy project will also provide data to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Sandia National Laboratories after being awarded $2 million in cost-share funding to demonstrate how battery storage can enable the expansion of renewable energy production, while further integrating renewables into the New England grid. EVLO will monitor and maintain the BESS under a 20-year long-term services agreement, in partnership with Vermont utilities including the Vermont Electric Cooperative, which serves the town of Troy.

Under the agreement, the Hertel-New York line, between the converter station at La Prairie and the New York border, will become the property of a company co-owned by Kahnawà:ke and Hydro-Québec, providing the community with various economic benefits for a period of 40 years. It is regrettable that the reporting by the WSJ has chosen to emphasize research from the years 1980 to 2000, while overlooking forward-looking studies such as those by Ouranos and the IPCC, which forecast increased, rather than diminished, water inflows in the coming decades. This selective portrayal could erroneously suggest that hydropower is not a viable solution for the energy transition. Such a conclusion is detrimental, considering that hydropower is the only renewable energy source capable of complementing solar and wind generation, a renewable energy mix that can effectively replace fossil fuels for electricity production.

Water supply variability is a normal and well-known phenomenon in hydroelectric production. Periods of low and high water levels have followed one another over the years. In Québec, for example, in 2004 and 2014, the energy stock was lower than it is today. In the long term, independent research such as one from Ouranos shows that climate change will likely favor northern hydro systems in Québec, increasing the water available for hydropower production, an increase of 6 to 8%, particularily where Hydro-Québec’s very large upstream reservoirs are available to hedge against inflow variability. In the context of the energy transition which relies on a combination of renewable sources it is unfortunate that these facts didn't make their way into the article.

We were happy to see our partner, the @mckahnawake, ringing the closing bell of the @tsx_tsxv this afternoon to celebrate the launch of the Kahnawake Sovereign Wealth Fund. The MCK launched this fund to generate income for the long-term economic prosperity of #Kahnawake. It will be used to invest in a variety of projects, including the Hertel-New York transmission line that will bring clean electricity to @nycgov. Hydro-Québec commends Kahnawake’s economic vision based on #sustainable development.
