There are lots of lessons here for conservatives. First, one of the reasons Reagan was so transformative in so many areas was he put professors in key positions in agencies and judiciary (Meese, Baxter, Miller, Muris, Ginsburg, Williams, Easterbrook, Bork, etc). Subsequent Republican Administrations have been skeptical of professors. Second, Khan doesn’t care that most of her initiatives lost in court. She’s playing the long game—losing today makes the case for investing to change the antitrust culture. Conservatives don’t generally think that way. Third, note the emphasis on training students to carry on the mission. Conservatives don’t understand that most of the power of the administrative state is in the agencies and within the agencies significantly with the staff. Educating future staffers and judges is how you win the long game. Think tanks don’t do that—they provide some senior people but aren’t in a position to create the foot soldiers to carry forward the mission. Yet conservative donors either continue to feed these institutions or just abandon them and support think tanks instead.

Some axioms to consider if you're an AI doomer re. employment: 1) historical drives for efficiency aren't absolute; 2) firms will, and are, seek(ing) regulatory moats; 3) and, most importantly, we all need someone to sue! That's what @kristianstout and I think, anyway. Read more below...
