Most things needed for a sustainable future – wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles – are metal intensive. Reaching net zero by 2050 will require an estimated 3 billion tonnes of metals to support the clean energy transition.
To meet demand while staying on track with the world’s sustainable development goals, we need to embrace circularity—focusing on both the production and use of metals.

Today, recognising the vital role human rights defenders play in promoting and protecting human rights, ICMM has strengthened its member commitments to include defenders explicitly in companies’ due diligence, stakeholder engagement, and security processes. To further support companies in doing so and to build awareness of the right to a clean, health and sustainable environment, ICMM has also launched three new human rights due diligence tools.

Increasing the circularity of mining and metals value chains will help us to sustainably and responsibly meet the growing demand for metals to support the energy transition
In September, ICMM launched its new Tools for Circularity to help mining and metals companies minimise waste and maximise value throughout every stage of the life cycle, from sourcing, to production, to use and recovery. Learn more: icmm.com/circular-econo…

ICMM members have made progress in reducing Scope 2 emission by increasing renewable energy use at mines worldwide, with now some mines fully powered by renewables—helping drive clean energy growth across regions and countries.
Since the Paris Agreement, our members have also launched over 70 initiatives to reduce Scope 3 emissions. These efforts range from investing in cleaner steelmaking technologies and reducing emissions in ore shipping to creating low-emission products like iron briquettes.
