In 40 years of living in this country, I haven't seen economic despair hit this hard, this fast, and this wide in a single week. The screams coming out of Turkish X this past week weren't just complaints, they were a society collectively hitting a wall. This is not a cycle anymore. Something is breaking. Here are some tweets that I've seen from Turkish X accounts on the Turkish economy(not economics) so that you learn your lessons, stop trusting your less shittier fiat and better prepare yourself for what is coming. 🧵
1. The number of insured employees decreased by 1 million in 6 months. This isn't just ordinary news! Because the ratio of insured employees to retirees hasn't dropped to 3, retirees are already receiving poverty-stricken pensions! This means that because the government is driving companies into bankruptcy with its poor economic management and failing to create jobs, retirees' pensions will fall even further!
2. Although the unemployment rate has fallen to 8.1% as of March, the broader unemployment rate has reached its highest level in the last 8 months at 31.5%.
3. In Istanbul, especially in the food retail sector, sales of food brands have dropped by 50% in April. A friend of mine, whose breakfast chain has branches in districts like Kadıköy, Beşiktaş, Beykoz, and Maltepe, saw a 60% drop in sales in April. The real downturn will begin after production decreases. Because consumption is decreasing, many producers will stop producing. As a result, two things will happen:
-There will be no decent (quality/healthy/delicious) products available on the market. We will be condemned to only mediocre products.
-Decent products will be imported. Because they will be sold in small quantities, they will be incredibly expensive. We won't be able to afford them.
4. The ultimate suffering will be experienced by the masses who understand quality, demand it, but cannot afford it, in other words, those who are not extremely wealthy. It won't be long now. Everyone I talk to says they have no money. They say business has slowed down. Demand has dropped dramatically in many sectors. Layoffs have started in many sectors. Companies are downsizing. They are laying off employees, selling property. Then they are closing down. They are trying to reduce inflation by reducing purchasing power, whereas if they restructured debts, reduced taxes by 50%, and encouraged investment, the market would recover quickly. However, raising interest rates to curb the exchange rate and forcing foreign investors to invest in interest-bearing Turkish Lira, and then failing to consider the political crises and the war with Iran, has depleted the reserves created by taking huge risks at the central bank.
5. The result, unfortunately, will be worse. This mentality is causing as much damage as if it had dragged us into war…
6. I don't know about the country, but it seems the citizens are already bankrupt. Wherever I go, there are no jobs, taxes are heavy, and money isn't circulating. May God have mercy on us.
7. The problem for young people isn't just finding a job, but also not being able to build a life with the job they find. Even white-collar workers are being forced to accept low salaries under the pretext of a "crisis." Even a salary of 80-100 thousand TL isn't enough to build a future after marriage, rent, furniture, and deposits.
Then you ask young people: "What do you want to do?" The answer is always the same: "If we can, we'll go abroad." Because in this country, young people can no longer dream of a future, let alone a job.
8. My neighbor went bankrupt. He's really, really in trouble. His brown leather-seated Mercedes is gone, then his house was seized. Life sometimes shows no mercy to anyone.
9. In an economy where foreign trade is financed with high-interest new debt, earning money through production is hardly possible. How many young men will take out loans at 50-60% interest, start a business, pay off that interest first, and then make money? It's difficult. No one is chasing interest, but circumstances are forcing it.
10. Today is Labor Day, a good day to remember that in Türkiye, the minimum wage has fallen 20% below the poverty line.
11. Erdoğan explained, calling it "worrying": "The age of marriage is rising, divorce rates are increasing. Our fertility rate has fallen below 2.1, the level required for population replacement, since 2017."
12. This is the most severe psychological damage to the middle class: They still think of themselves as middle class, but they cannot produce middle-class behavior. They cannot buy a house, cannot save, cannot plan for retirement, cannot create a long-term security account for their children. If the lower classes in Turkey have no money left to save, the middle classes have no reason to save either. The issue is not just putting money in, but the fact that the money put in doesn't produce a leap forward in people's lives. The psychological engine of saving is a goal. If the goal is not visible, discipline also fades.
13. Bosch has decided to lay off 1400 workers: "This decision was made due to the contraction and resulting downsizing in the economy."
14. April exports totaled $25.4 billion, imports $33.9 billion, and the trade deficit reached $8.5 billion. The trade deficit for the first four months reached $37.2 billion.
15. Large companies like Koç and Sabancı are transferring capital abroad: "We are developing alternative policies because high interest rates and low exchange rates are unsustainable. The sale of assets by large capital is certainly not a coincidence. Large capital sometimes needs cash, but we are in an unpredictable period. There are companies like Koç and Sabancı that are transferring their capital abroad."
16. Rents on Bağdat Street in Kadıköy, Istanbul, have become astronomical. A chain cafe that opened just three months ago has gone bankrupt. Many places are constantly changing hands. Large chains are renting such places at a loss, simply to show that they have a store on the street for brand value.
17. Izmir autobahn to become a toll road: It will be privatized for 25 years, with an expected annual revenue of at least 4.3 billion lira.
18. If you have the financial means, retreat into solitude. If not, retreat into solitude as soon as you meet these conditions. Take on no responsibilities. Simply create the most peaceful environment to spend the rest of your life in and cut off all communication with everyone.
End of thread 🧵
I end this depressing thread with a picture that I took on a Saturday which represents the Turkish economy very well in my opinion. There are 4 shops in this picture below 👇
- 1st one is closed.
- 2nd and 3rd one are also closed and available for rent.
- 4th one didn't even open the shop on a Saturday.
Moral of the story: Cut your expenses as much as possible, find ways for extra income, don't lose your job and buy much #bitcoin as you can because you never know. Shit hits the fan fast; gradually then suddenly.
Thanks for reading and have a great Sunday 👊

Thankful everyday for the @MemeFactoryTM and for the last 6 years how they have been able to keep me sane in all this craziness of Bitcoin.
I’ve made some dumb decisions, but I would have made many more dumb and uninformed decisions without them. Not to mention all the laughs❤️

And @ICOffenderII deserves a Nobel Prize in Physics. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Either Chaincode Labs gives @hodlonaut this award, or they nullify the award's value as a whole by giving it to anyone else. Personally, I believe they will give it to someone who did something trivial, or gave a lot of positive coverage to the Core side of The Spam Wars.
